17-55 sharper in portrait than landscape

The lamp is sharper in one, the writing sharper in the other.
That bright light being close by makes the writing a bad focus target.

My guess is that it has absolutely nothing to do with the lens - but all to do with the AF of the camera. At this point I don't recall which way, but most of the AF sensors in the camera are sensitive to either vertical or horizontal more than the other way. IIRC only the centre point has bot type sensors.

Now, the test shot you have shows the focus point of the lens is at two different points. The lamp in 3005 is in focus, whereas the card is far closer to the focal distance in 3006.

New test shots posted with and with out IS.
1st shot from my Fuji s602 for reference.

Looks like you muct have IS OFF when using a tripos if you don't want fussy pics.

What is the tripod and head you're using?
My 17-55 IS is sharper in portrait mode than landscape mode. Has
any one else seen this effect?
