Panasonic Reliability?

In the market for a small PNS digicam for my fiancee's mom to upgrade to... In the process of looking at reviews and such of camera in her price range (preferably

Canon SD630 (for its large LCD and reliability) and the Panny DMC-FX01 (image stablization and low price at ~ $281 compared to $333 for the Canon).

So taking this information, i set out to the old CC that i used to work at, and the bestbuy down the street. The canon (just like the SD400 i used to own) was very nice in person, though the LCD could have used a bit higher res. However, i was disappointed that the two panasonic display models (i want to say FX09 or 08 and another) were both broken (on one the mode dial had lost its ability to snap in place and spun like crazy and the other would turn on for a second then right back off, both on AC power).

Anyway, so i drive down the street to bestbuy, who thankfully had a display model of the FX01 (store associate mentioned they opened it up for display 2-3 weeks ago). Unfortunately with this one, when i took a picture, the resulting image was something i cant even describe (almost inverted neon). Checked all the settings, reset everything to factory, took another pic, same problem. I then turned off the flash and took a natural light picture in all automatic settings, this time it was horribly overexposed (to the point i couldnt make anything out on screen). I assume it was an issue with the sensor possibly, not really sure.

Now, i know not to typically take store display models into consideration of reliability due to the abuse they suffer, BUT, it kind of worries me after the experience i had today. All the canons (even the models that were well over a year old), still worked great, while i couldnt get a single panny to work properly. I really want to get her the panny (the specs and price are definately a better deal), but im worried about reliability. Anyone care to comment?

We have a big family and have owned 11 digital cameras, most of which have been bounced around somewhat. We have had some problems with a fuji, a Canon. and a Panasonic. I think it is more the nature of the Beast . . . we expect these highly sophisticated but low cost electronic marvels to bounce around and swim with us too much!

I recently bought a FX01 and it lasted 10 days (until the
end of my holiday in Mallorca fortunately). The
zoom stopped zooming and then the menus shutdown.
However, I did drop it 3 times, once from about 2.5m
up a kids climbing frame while trying to rescue my
daughter, so I can't really complain.
My previous camera was a Canon Ixus which has
a noticeably stronger case than the Panasonic &
is still going after 6 years and many drops.

Having said that the FX01 was/is a very nice camera.
Just don't drop it.

In my experience Panasonic builds very reliable cameras. I own 2 fz1, fz20, fz30, Lx1 and tz1. They all are built VERY well. It is one of Panasonics STRONG suits is their build quality. In the time I've been a member on this forum I have never seen anyone complain about build quality on any of their panasonic cameras.

Agree with laree...build quality is good BUT quality control at pano is bad...

If I have uploaded an image don't hesitate to de-noise it, correct the WB, clone out dust and dead pixels, saturation, USM, resize, print and send me the result..
Also advice and criticise.

I had a LC-5 that was in the tailbag on my motorcycle when at 60 MPH the bag straps broke and the bag hit the ground. The camera hit the pavement, scared the case, broke the on/off lever and knocked the battery out of the case. Camera is still working and taking good photos. I have update since to the FZ-20 and now I have a 30.

Hey tasty, I didn't know you were "active" on dpr. You aren't on AIM right now at 2:47am here, but does "Camera One" in Sarasota have a website? I'll be down in sarasota tomorrow and I want to trade my Pentax 645 45mm 2.8 zeiss for a portrait lens...

In my experience, if you drop any digital camera and it still works, you are lucky, especially the small/lightweight ones. Light weight and robustness are competing engineering goals. The first thing to do with a little digicam immediately upon purchase is to put a leash on it. I like the ones that you can put around your neck, and carry the camera in a shirt pocket. Some of these, like the FX-01, are slippery little buggers.

I can't speak for the FX01, but I've dropped my FZ5
once and it still works perfectly after more than a year's
use. It's been my impression after visiting various forums
here since 2004 that Panasonic is one of the more reliable
brands with lower freqency of issues than particularly
three-four other brands whose name I will spare from
publicity. :-)

Olympus and Nikon are a couple of other brands that I also
have faith in regarding build and endurance.
(Never owned an Oly though.)

Just saw this one:

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1010&message=18507650

"Unit #1 - returned due to MENU button had an odd click/ping when pressed

Unit #2 - noticable dark blob (dirt on CCD?) on all shots above F5 & video

Unit #3 - 'squeak' noise during zoom on video soundtrack. Also LCD prone to pop out when facing out.

What is the world record for S3 exchanges at Circuit City? Will they tire of me before I tire of them?"

Anyway FWIW, I don't think Panny have worse build and reliability than
Canon.

F Z 5 and a pile of accessories

I love the TZ1, but I had to return mine because the flash didn't work, out of the box. Even in forced flash, it would flash maybe once every ten tries, and often out of sync (dark picture). Sometimes I could see a faint flicker in the flash tube.

I ordered a new one but must wait unitl CC gets them back in stock.

I totally agree.

I had an FZ1v2 and an FZ5 and they both were built very nice and I never saw a single defect in either of them.

Right now I don't have a Panny but I plan to soon, at least one.
