Will a compact flash card reader interfere or prevent one from using the image viewer utility. I haven't actually gotten my D7 yet or any of the accessories, but am trying to anticipate what I might want. My understanding is that the card reader/writer would allow me to download the pictures from the camera much more quickly, but if it will compromise the color quality I'm not sure it is worth it. Any insight would be appreciated.--Kim

It is not a question of speed I think. I for one don't like to plug my camera up to the computer and to an external power supply. (3 or 4 connections) I find it more convenient to just pop the FC out and plug it in the writer reader. There is no difference in the picture quality from either one.

I found that there was a significant speed increase in download times by using an external USB CF reader. There was some discussion on this forum some time ago about this, the download speed of the camera is quite disappointing :o(

In fact, I saved a packet by readng about it here because I was toying with buying a firewire reader and that was a lot more!!

Yes, I found that using a rather unexpensive Sandisk CF reader download times have reduced by a good 400%; the only hazard would be to drop my 1GB microdrive - it's said to cause sudden death (for both disk and owner)

Rob-

What type/brand of reader did you purchase? So you can still use the image viewer utility with the reader?

Forgive me but he said he had an increase in download times with a cf reader which rather amazed me.

In fat I'm at a loss to understand how it could be quicker to download from the camera, apart from all the faffing about with leads etc.

Oh, sorry, I really had a good F in mathematics at school.
Correct: "...have become faster by a (always good?) 400%"

Ya boys are terrific, nothing escapes to your piercing eyes. Will not sleep all night thinking of it.

I'm using a PNY. I always save the original files so I use explorer to transfer from the compact flash reader which appears as a removable disk to a file on my cdrive. Then I use the DIVU to take the files from the cdrive.

Occasionally, I get a message that I need to format the flash card which I don't want to do because it would erase the images. I think it occurs when I plug in the reader first and then plug the card into the reader. In any case, if I disconnect (Windows ME says I have to tell it first but Windows 98 does not) and start over, it works. Since my card is only 16mb, I have only been experimenting with fine JPEG. I suspect that RAW may not work.

I also notice fairly quick speeds on the PNY reader ( 5-10 sec) much faster than the camera but when I get a much larger card in the future, this may seem long as well. the process does seem a lot easier with the compact flash reader compared to the camera and I don't have to recharge the batteries as often.
