Has anyone ever experience a problem with their Sigma Super 500 DG flash, where when it changes from a different distance (ie 50mm to 70mm) it starts making a crazy noise and keep doing it... basically freezing up use of the flash. I'm not quite sure what the problem is. This happens on both of my flashes...

Thanks

I haven't had mine for long, but have not experienced that problem. I have noticed it doesn't always fire the AF Assist beam with my Sigma lenses.

How old is the flash?

Next time it does it, look at the front, and see if the zoom head is stuck, and trying to more (which is whats probably causing the noise).
When you pwoer cycled the flash, it resets the head distance.

You also can go into manual mode, and when you switch it manual mode and does the same, you know the head has gone.

If the zoom head has gone, it will need to be serviced.

Yes, this has happned to me before. I've also read of it happening to others. Seems to be fairly common with intensive use.

As others have said, turning it on and off will fix the problem.

I upgraded to the 580EX which is teriffic. I'll keep the Sigma as a backup, though.

I used it a fair amount with my 20D without any issues.. but now, using it on my 30D, I get the same problem you are describing.. perhaps its coincidence.. but it started happening right when I started using it with my 30D..
