I took some pics of fireworks at a local Christmas festival. Thanks to everyone here for the advice I picked up. I'm very new to digital photography and only slightly familiar with apetures, shutter speeds, ISO, etc... I used full manual, f8, 1.6sec, ISO 100, manual focus to infinity (and handheld... actually, propped on the back of a stroller). Notice in these two shots, there is a blank line through the firework explosion on the left. Looks like I ran an eraser across it. I can't figure out what happened. Any suggestions or ideas?

A tree or pole in the way? Seems like a silly answer but I've done it before.

Come check out the fireworks gallery at my site if you'd like some more ideas for that sort of shooting :-)

Oops. I bet you're correct. There were some palm trees and power lines I was trying to avoid. I easily could have something in the way. sigh

I was fiddling with settings and trying to anticipate the next explosion. Out of 13 pics, 5 came out ok, 5 were too late (just some fading lights) and 3 were totally blank!

I can't access your gallery right now. I can ping the address, but the server doesn't seem to be serving. I'll keep trying. Any comments/suggestions are welcome.
