Firts of all, I would like to say that I am new to this site and I look forward to the advice and thoughts that anyone have to offer. I am a recent purchaser of a D70s with very limited knowledge of photography. I look forward to taking pictures with my wife and hope that my wife can take photography as a hobby. My first question to the forum is a question that I have about Canon vs. Nikon. I have always been under the assumption that Nikon was top of the line and the rest are just details. As I have searched this site it seems as though this site is a little biased towards Canon. Can anyone comment on this and let me know what you think. Thanks.... Coach

...I miss these. With all of the drama lately, this thread is EXACTLY what we need. Phil will probably ban us all, then send lightening through to our computer and kill us all ;-).

The answer is simple, and everyone else is wrong.

Nikon rules
Canon sucks. They just have better ISO 1600 LOL.
I can just imagine Phil's finger hovering over the ban button right
now, haha!

They all do the job, it's what one you like better.

hi coach, welcome to the site, and the forums.
you should not be asking Q. of this nature, IMO.
the camera is a tool.
use it.
learn about it.
grow from it.
when IT is limiting your abilities, trade it.

as to site bias, you could spend the rest of your natural life debating it, but the sun shines, and shutters should be clicking, smiling faces being photographed...

should you wish to fall into the canon / nikon trap, you may feel more comfortable at the nikon cafe (they MAY be biased, based on their name) ;)
oh, even the bias can be swayed btw ...

Canon is much better for people with very limited knowledge of photography.

Why?

'Cause they just don't know no better!

PS: What do you coach? Fighting?

Disclaimer: This comment is intended as a humorous interjection only. Fact of the matter is, I own both Nikon and Canon. I happen to like both.

I really thought you were going to say Ferrari vs Cosworth. :-)
I thought it would be TurboCharger vs. SuperCharger.

After this thread we're all going to be digitzed and sent to the wastebasket. Too bad the OP must be getting confused by all of this mayhem.

I'll misquote Donald Rumsfeld when I say,
'You go take pictures with the glass you've got.'

Only after they buy the Nikon. If you don't care about low noise performance like you can get from a Cannon, then Nikon is the way to go. Nikon feels good in your hands and they offer some really sweet lenses that will make any one bais. I just bought the 17-55mm F2.8, very nice. Have you held a 30D lately? She was fast, but it took me a second to find the shutter button. It's in a weird place. I guess I'm used to my D70. Now if Nikon can get this noise problem straighten out, then I would be one happy camper. Since most of my last 3000 shots from my D70 was between 800 - 1600 ISO, my images are just a little on noisy side. This is the only case where I wished I bought a Cannon.

Welcome to the Forum,

Mark

Just to whet your appetite about what Nikon cameras are capable of here is a site for a photograher from you home state of Louisiana.

To answer your question, Canon is the largest manufacturer of cameras and there are very many Canon shooters on this site. Like someone else has stated. The camera is only a tool.

I bought my D70 based on name brand also (along w/ admiring D70 pics of course) but I see a lot to like about Canon images too. I like Coke AND Pepsi and even rootbeer!

FWIW:

I started on Canon back in the early 1980s.

In the early 1990s, I switched to Nikon because I was upset at Canon for leaving me behind with useless FD lenses when they went to EOS...and because Nikon seemed to have the best system for flash photography.

I saw that Nikon tried to make their gear upward compatible and saw this as an investment in my future with Nikon. I think that Nikon still has the most sophisticated flash system and the old glass still works on the new gear.

Sound like you are a bit anxious wether or not you bought the right camera :)

After playing a bit with the 350D im more happy than ever having chosen the D70 myself. Not because the 350D sucks, by no means. Its a terrific camera, but i just find the D70 so much more fun to use. IMHO noone can make high quality bodies as good as Nikon.

As long as you are happy with the camera thats what matters. Cameras from both brands hold such high quality that you should be well of with any of them.

And happy shooting with your D70s. Its a very fine camera for anyone wanting to learn more about photography.
