Tizzy takes to RDS...

I came home yesterday with 524 shots on the card, and had taken about 190 shots the day before, all on the same charge. The battery charge indicator on the LCD was registering at 1/3. Not bad for a puny little battery like that? I'm impressed anyway. I think burst shooting is quite economical, actually, but I have to say that I had the "Hi Power" LCD on for most of these shots.

I realized how difficult it is to follow fast action with an LCD screen when I tried taking pics at a water ski show. The red dot surely facilitated keeping those birds on target. Good shots.

Be careful where you point that red dot. You don't want to be mistaken for a terrorist assasin.

My battery has not lasted that long at all. I am on my second charge and only using the built in memory card. Possibly I have taken 100 pics but I have downloaded them to the computer alot. Does that use up the battery or do I have a weak battery? Thanks for your suggestions. Your photo file is in my favorites, I do enjoy looking at all your pics. Thanks for posting and helping us out. I should say I enjoy looking at all the pics of the TZ1 owners.

Really great shots John. I just started trying to shoot bird in flight and man I now know you are really good because it is really hard to get those guys in a half way decent picture.

My question is about using an adjustable sight rail to aim the camera. Has anyone already tried this?

A sight rail is solar powered so it does not need a battery, and should be accurate for aiming the camera at long zoom. Perhaps a sight rail could be mounted on top of the camera. Any thoughts if this is practical?

I'm sure I need professional help!

These are really fun pix, John, as always. You are a clever tinkerer, aren't you!

Can anyone recommend a RDS for a Tz1? A simple one to use and mount and all the accessories needed? Is there a Web site were I can find it?
Thank you very much in advance.

I looked at your idea, but didn't want to bump up the thread; now someone else has done that. I don't think the rail would work as well as the Red Dot, because with the Red Dot Sight, I don't have to have my eye in line with the sight to make the connection, just put the dot on the bird, and the camera is pointed the right way. This is important with fast-moving birds, as at least I don't always have the time to slue my head around as fast as the bird is moving across the sky. Thanks for the suggestion; it might well work for some.

Minimum equipment:

1) Red Dot Sight. I use Daisy "Electronic Point Sight." Another one that looks attractive is Daisy's "Max View" sight. Here's a URL: http://www.daisy.com/shopping/customer/product.php?productid=16261&cat=263&page=1

2) Mounting bracket for RDS: XTend-a-Sight from Photosolve: http://www.photosolve.com/main/product/xtendasight/index.html

3) Flat bracket for connecting to tripod mount, with flash shoe at one end: http://www.adorama.com/FABS.html

I don't know of others using RDS with the TZ1; maybe there are? But this list will let you duplicate the one shown in my post, a decent place to start.

Thanks for the explanation. I am having much trouble aiming at fast birds. The Electronic Point Sight may be in my future.

Thank you very much John. I already ordered the devices and wait for them with the TZ1 by the end of the month. By the way, we can get the camera in silver for $304 at BHPHOTO.

You might consider buying a large capacity memory card and a card reader, two relatively inexpensive items. These will enable you to take many more photos before having to download to the computer, and will reduce drain on the battery.

It has been suggested that the USB output jack on cameras may wear out prematurely and/or may be accidentally damaged. Using a card reader gets around that potential problem. Additionally, the memory card and reader together can be used as a temporary USB storage device, when you need to transfer files between computers.

Thanks for your response, Mike. I had not opened my memory card at that time but have done so now. I was really trying the camera out before my 14 days was up at at CC. The reason for downloading so much is I am really trying different scenes. We leave in 4 weeks for Europe and trying as many different situations as possible. I suppose I should get a card reader some time. I have looked at them at Office Depot. I am going to start a new thread about the scene modes and any experiences. Love this camera and we have an Olympus 750 but this can fit in my small purse.

Hello,

I would like to add to John's efforts with the red dot sight.

There are a lot of brackets in the recent B&H summer catalog and from that reference I searched out "Custom Brackets" as one that looked promising. Sorry I don't have a link, but the search was (custom brackets usa) on google.

They have several ready made brackets that will give you a left-hand grip and put the sight above the camera. They also have an area of build your own bracket parts to select from.

This is just one bracket maker to choose from. I am not recommending them, just saying they may be a good place to start looking. Some of these parts may go together easily with those mentioned in the above replies.

I do not have the TZ or an RDS, but I am interested in both.
