I am buying my first digital camera and wanted to see what people who know it have to say concerning price and quality. I see that the new S30 doens't come with a lot of extra components but it is a 3.1 which is supposed to be very good, isn't it?

Any other suggestion for a camera?

Thanks,--Alex

I had an S100 for a first camera and i loved it...takes pretty good pictures in most conditions. Ive recently upgraded to a G1 (needed more controls) and its a great camera to learn with...ive learn ALOT in the past 3 months that ive had it. With the s100 i had i would get decent prints up to about 4x6...any bigger than that and you would start to really see the lack of details. But for a first camera i think its a good choice. The S30 has alot in common with the G1 as far as controls go...except you dont get a hotshoe for an external flash. The images are also a little soft from what ive seen...probably nothing a little in camera sharpening wouldnt fix though. 3.1 MP in my opinion is probably more than enough for general shots...i print 8x10's all the time from my G1 (3.3 mp) and the results are very sharp and defined. But if your just gonna be doing point and shoot i think the s100 is a good choice, but if you want to take the time to take really stunning shots, get something with full manual controls like the s30 or G1..even though they might take a slight more effort to get good results.

Thanks Jeff. :-) You really gave me an idea of the main differences!
