Got a rare afternoon to shoot yesterday without kids. I got fast primes for low light shooting as well as to play with shallow dof. I am thoroughly enjoying them on the 5D. Here's some pics from yesterday. I like them saturated and I didn't clean up the vignetting out of laziness and partly because I like it.

85f1.2 @f2

85f1.2 @f1.8

85f1.2 @f2

24f1.4 @f8

24f1.4 @f6.3

24f1.4 @f16, 1/80s (shutter priority)

i picked up one of babies later . . .
24f1.4 @2.2

that's why i put the shutter speed info. the train was heading towards me and i just panned to the right. i was testing af speed compared to my d2h and 28-70 combo. definately more keepers with the d2h as it was made for action but the 5d and 24L work.

Call me nuts, but I actually like the vignetting on these photos. It adds character to them in my opinion. I was never bothered by such, and never once touched up a photo to remove vignetting.

PS: here's one of mine, where vignetting is somewhat visible:

Agreed; with some degree of vignetting, gives more density in the corner where, images are generally too blown out (skies, etc.). I like it.

Ah, Red's. Miss SF!

All ... VERY NICE... THANKS for the post

this is such a dramatic demo of how back blur and VERY sharp focust foreground subject are separated .. into 3d effect...

that is so clean and clear..

the first...

-----------
I wonder how much of that clarity and sharpness will transfer to a 30D
... is the 5D responsible for any of this?
(of course it is a true 85 lens on that body...)

======
I recently had a chance to buy 85 MK 1... used
but it back focused a little.. and.. was really waiting for the MK 2....
dont mind the extra $ .... if it moves a little faster..

I can wait...
gonna try the 17-55 IS first...

also that is a very nice / effective shot of the baby and the bridge...
I miss my home town...

i don't have many, and of those, they are boring family pics. yesterday was the first time i had to just go and shoot with the 24L.

you can poke around here and check out the exif info and original files on my smugmug page.

i know the following are from the 24L.

machine, capable of producing about a four-stop drop-off in the corners when used wide open on a full frame sensor.

Depending on the angle to the sky and conditions, this can appear pretty strong.

Great photos.

does look like it was heavily pp'ed but i actually only slid the levels over to the right a bit. that was it. all the rest is just heavy vignetting. the only pic with the most pp'ing was the cruise ship where i had to crop and adust levels. oh, there was also a little graffiti on the green sign i cleaned up so the didn't promote the 'artist'.

thank you! only related experience is the nikkon 28 f1.4 and 85 1.4 on the d50 and d2h. i never fealt confident about shooting either of those bodies at near max aperatures on a sunny day because of their more limited dynamic range. that may not be an issue on d200, d2x's, and 30d's though. however it's definately easier to play w/dof when you have wider angle to shoot from on a ff body.

I really like the vignetting on the last one... just personal taste and easily fixed in ACR.

Are you sure about that? that's 16 times as dark.
