So after owning my camera for a year, I finally bite the bullet and send it in for a cleaning and calibration. Much to my surprise they charge me over $200.00. If that wasn't bad enough, when it was returned to me there was a chip above the N in canon just below the pop flash. Also a scratch on the LCD screen. I own a hood man protector, so you can tell how protective I am of the screen. When I called Canon they told me the tech did not make any mention of such flaws, so I must of caused them. I told her of course they did not mention it, they weren’t there. She proceeded to tell me it was a he said she said situation and that I should learn to live with it. I know these flaws have nothing to do with the cameras performance, but its the principle.

What do you guys think? Am I making to much out of this?

Thanks for your time

Yes it is. The first thing I did was check the serial number.

I sent in my PowerShot S70 to have them clean the viewfinder (I actually used it), only to have someone over there dent and deform the front case, replacement cost $150. The thing is, I know I didn't cause that, but at that point, there's nothing I really can argue.

Let's just say that I got more than for what I bargained

Maybe when sending stuff in for servicing, it might be worth it to snap some close-ups of the outer case, LCD, etc. and include them in the box with a little note documenting current condition (even mention any scratches you know about). Sorta like what you do when you rent a car...

Was it not under warranty?

After reading this kind of thread, I'm even more happy that I clean my own sensor - frequently :)

Could you post the link to your cleaning methods. When I got to it in another post, it was no longer available. I believe you actually breathe on the sensor cover/mirror and wipe with a Q-tip?

Thanks...Jack

Maybe you should track down how to contact the corp. headquarters, and send them a letter. It's up to you whether you'd like some sort of resolution/compensation, but at least to put them on notice that the particular service center is doing this sort of thing.

It could all come down to one employee having a bad season (tossing or dropping goods), that Canon should be made aware of. Whatever the reason. . . if superiors are not notified, blah, blah, etc.

You'll have to ignore the gallery's collection of bad compositions, improper exposures, and amateurish post processing. ;)

i had an issue where the sensor died on my MK2 and i sent it in to only have them tell me I BROKE IT WHEN I CLEANED IT.
the thing is, i NEVER EVEN CLEANED IT!

in any event, it became a he said/she said argument as well and they basicaly has me in the corner TELLING ME I BROKE IT and it was not a defect of all 1Dmk2 (EVEN THOUGH MANY MANY PEOPLE HAD THIS ISSUE!) - aperently they "all" tried to clean their sensor incorrectly in the same time?

complete B/S

unfortunatly i love Canon R&D and the cams overall, but if there is a problem
all i can say is GOOD LUCK!

when you spend 2-3K on just camera and the company CANNOT HONOR it's WARRANTY or Repair center, it just shows carecter!

i am sure he can live with the dent, but it's just silly that CANON cannot honor it's faults!

I sent my 10D in for a sensor cleaning when it was nearly new. It was returned just as bad with one flaw (perhaps pixel) related that won't clean off. I sent my Pro1 in for a lens cleaning and softness along the left edge issue. It was returned with the large specks removed but a fine, 1/16-32 in. piece of lint is now in the lens. Fortunately, it doesn't show in the pics. Also, the lens is still soft along the left edge. Discouraged.

I can believe it. I hand-carried 3 lenses and my 20D into Canon, NJ for calibration. They did a great job and didn't hurt anything. But when the counter tech brought my stuff from out back, he carried the body with one attached lens, and the other two loose lenses in his hands. Think about how you would carry a camera with no strap, and two other lenses in your hands. It's a juggling match! One was actually slipping and he had to hurry to the counter to set them down before he dropped it. I was having a mild coronary. Mind you, there are gear baskets all over the place he could have used. The problem is these guys get so cavalier about handling expensive camera stuff that stuff can happen -- and probably does.

Let me know if this link doesn't work and I'll whine to my ISP. I tried it from a different domain the other day and it worked from there.

But one URL that I'd posted didn't work because of some recent changes at my hosting service. Try this one and let me know if it's ok:

Keep in mind that this is just how I clean my sensor. You do this, as with any "touching the sensor" method, entirely at your own risk. It works for me :)

...the guys out here in Irvine, CA are awesome. Take the time to talk with you even if there is a line out the door.

I've taken in 100-400mm L (zoom lock was permanently locked) and they replaced the focusing mechanism at no charge making it focus even better than before. I also had my 300D in for AF mirror separation/shutter replacement (after 35K shots) and it was completed a day before they said it would.

Saying that, I think that the N.J. guys should be held liable for their actions and that you shouldn't have to go out of your way to get your camera repaired, but maybe next time try sending it to a different facility. It's not much more for shipping and you may have a better experience.

Definitely make a complaint to corporate or the head of the repair facility.

Sorry about your problem.

Sean

I just called their tech support and it appears that they've been having problems yesterday, last night, and again today.

I think the link I just posted is fine but the server end of things is being overhauled.

I'll let them know, but I think the problem is more widespread than just my site :)

Sorry.
