In the past month i have returned a T9,P200,W5,Canon W100,Canon SD630 and just got the T30 and I'm returning it....Now,I realize these are basically pocket type cameras as opposed to the H-1 but in NO WAYdo they even come close to the H-1.....I have expensive DSLR'S and L glass and still use the H-1 often...its unquestionably the best value per dollar on the market...I anxiously await the H5 and AAK'S reports..if the quality is at least as good as the H-1 I will buy it for the black body,3"LCD,and higher megapixels.....I have learned that regardless of the number of megapixels smaller camera and smaller sensors will not produce a pic close to a larger camera...there is a definite downside to going smaller in my opinion.

i didnt mean to sound like too much of a smart guy :D

love the german short haired pointer in your gallery such nice dogs :)

Where did you buy your cameras? The store must have a very liberal return policy. What reason(s) did you give for the returns? Did you have to pay a restocking fee for any of them?

Question? Out of all of the smaller cameras you recently purchased and returned, which one in your opinion was preferred. I was one that ordered the H1 from Dell but got cancelled, so I decided on the P200 because of the price point $200.00 and reviews. I have not open the box yet. I am a point and shoot person but I love quality pictures, true color.
I am so undecided if I should keep the P200. Any comments -

The P200 is a very fine camera and the only reason I returned it was because I read about all the dust issues..I liked it alot.

The T9 I liked alot as well and only returned it because shortly after I got it I learned of the T30 with its 3" screen, higer megapixels, and longer battery life.I may well repurchase that camera.

The N-1 is a really nice camera but not sure I like the touch screen.

The W100 was nothing special in my eyes and I wanted IS.

Not sure what I'm going to do...I'm going to test the T30 more just to make sure I'm not happy and before i take that $75 hit.

You will not be unhappy with the P200.I'm sure there are many many owners who have never had a dust problem.

Last year on my road towards getting a H1, I returned 2 cameras to Best Buy. The first one I returned, but hadn't made up my mind yet as to what I wanted - so I paid a restocking fee. The 2nd one I returned I stated that I was not satisfied with the camera's performance (I really wasn't) and stated that it must be defective. The rep at the store told me that if I purchased a different camera during the same transaction as the return that Best Buy would waive the restocking fee (as long as the reurn and new sale was on the same receipt). So camera #3 was the Sony H1 and I've been a happy camper since then. Maybe just something to keep in mind.

I personally hope that they really did mark camera #2 as defective to be returned to the manufacturer, but as it "worked", I cannot be sure of that.

I briefly owned a P200. I returned it to Staples (which has a no-questions-asked return policy, BTW).

You need to understand that, while the P200 can take very good images, it is not in the same class as an H1.

1) The 12X zoom of the H1 changes everything. Makes picture-taking an entirely different, more flexible, more exciting experience.

2) Having complete control over the camera leaves you room to grow. I was amazed to find that there were only two aperture settings for the P200. That means that you will never have control over depth-of-field, and that you will not even have the opportunity to learn to control depth-of-field.

3) I was able to produce out-of-focus pictures (about 1/3) even on a tripod. In fact, two pictures taken of the same static subject at the same distance, one in perfect focus (excellent picture), one entirely out of focus.

One of the most important features of the H1 (aside from the brilliant images it takes) is that you can shoot fully automatic or fully manual with the same camera. It lets you grow as a photographer, it lets you get shots you never could have gotten with a P200.

And The H1 does not have a dust problem in the lens assembly. The P200 does.

If you need a really small, pocketable camera, the P200 is a good choice. If you need a great photographic machine, the H1 is definitely the better choice.

In the US, that is illegal.

If the camera has been in anyone's hands, it is USED and required, under law to be resold as such. At least at "Open Box".

No reputable retailer resells returns as new, there's just too much legal risk.

Staples has a no-questions-asked return policy, and sends each returned camera back to the manufacturer.

Circuit City does the same, except that they will sell display models as "open box" at a significant discount.

Ritz has a no-questions-asked return policy, too and they also return the cameras to the manufacturer.

I doubt very much that 7 people will get his castoffs. They will be resold later on by the manufacturer, at a steep discount, clearly labeled "refurbished".

Thank for your feedback, it is great to bounce thoughts off. I want it all, I think I will keep the P200 for the purse, for the quick shots and I think I will invest in the H1/H2 or H5 for important events with family and friends and grow and learn with the camera. I feel good about this decision. We are going to the Grand Canyon this summer, and I want to take a AWESOME camera with me.
