Here's an idea. For those who have studios and light rigs, would you mind shooting a shot or two of the set-up from what would be a subject's viewpoint so those of us without a studio can see what you are using? If you could label the items (Maker/model#) it would be great!

Sounds like a good idea. I'm in the process of building a new studio so cant offer much illustration but will make a few points here:

Traditional studio portrait lighting is pretty simple and straightforward. Main light at 45* from subject, and 45* up. Fill light varies depending on who you talk to. Cricchio uses an umbrella somewhere close to the camera. If so, carefull not to create low catch lights in the eyes.

If you decide not to use traditional, then you have an almost infinite amount of choices to experiment with. (that's the second main reason I bought a digital - lots of free "film" to make experimentrs with.)

Sometimes I use a kicker light, which is a snooted light, somewhere near the same F stop as main light . This is to accent or highlight some aspect of the portrait. Can use a snooted light for hair light. I dont seem to have any luck with back lights, so often i create that effect with photoshop, vignetting with layers, mask, and levels.

Digital is so light sensitive that you dont need to buy expensive high wattage. However, the variable f stop capability makes the expensive models desirable in that you dont have to constantly move lights back and forth to adjust stops.

I prefer White Lightning equipment, but will use Medallight brand or even shoot Metz or Vivatar into umbrella.

Very nice Brian, could you please put the link and the exact model # plus the price for the softbox and light on your reply message. Thank you

Hi David,

Can we hear your opinions/first impressions of the Alien Bees? Build quality of the strobes, the stands, umbrellas or softbox? Workability of the photoslave, or are you using a PC Sync directly from the E-10?

Thanks
Leighton

Leo,

Thanks for the post. However just an FYI to all. If your linked image will take use to a nude, semi-nude or glamour/lingere shot, please say so in your posting. Some of us work in a corporate environment. In my company, employees viewing such images over a work computer face a serious reprimand or dismissal.

Thanks,
Stew

Hey Brian:

Can you do me a favor and tell me either the size or the model # of the Photoflex softbox from the picture of your setup for black background?

Sure would appreciate it.
