Little problem here...

I have three 64mg cards for my CP990. One (Lexar) is USB enabled so I can use my cardreader with that one to download the pics and the INFO.TXT file to my harddrive. The other two cards (Apacer) are not USB compatible, can't use in cardreader and must use NikonView to download from camera to harddriver. However, when using NikonView, the INFO.TXT file is not shown in the folder. When using Nikonview, how do I locate the INFO.TXT file? I even went into DOS mode and tried to find the camera as a separate drive but no luck there, it doesn't show up?
Any ideas?????
Thanks in advance for any help.
Cheers--Sandi

Sandi,

It's not necessary to use NikonView at all when you connect your camera to your computer. After NikonView starts up when you plug in your camera, close the program and then open "My computers". There, you should be able to see an aditional new drive, just like the drive when you connect your cardreader.

Another thing, if you are looking for the info.txt to read informations about your pictures, may I suggest you try the following freeware program I have searched and found:

1) Exifer for Windows:
http://www.friedemann-schmidt.com/software/exifer/

2) EXIFRead:
http://members.tripod.com/~tawba/exifread.htm

3) Exif Reader
http://www.takenet.or.jp/~ryuuji/minisoft/exifread/english/

4) EXIF Image Viewer

http://home.pacbell.net/michal_k/exif_v.html

5) Digital Camera Extended File Information Viewer

http://oneilsoftware.hypermart.net/Exif/Exif.html

6) EXIF View

http://www.quiknet.com/~frcn/EXIF.html

The first five are actaully programs, where as the last one is a .dll file, which when installed, you can see the information when you click on a pictures property.

I hope this helps.

Thanks, Shafak, but unfortunately, I've already tried all that. It does not show up at all as a separate drive (also had the same problem when I used the IBM USB memory key). I'm using WIN98.

The information in INFO.TXT is different from the EXIF information and I wanted to have both. I used ThumbsPlus for reading the EXIF information. INFO.TXT also includes mode, metering, white balance, sharpness settings for the pic.
Cheers, Sandi

Well, try this then. I too had a problem with a seperate drive not showing up. I have a multi-USB port hub to which I connect my printer, scanner, cdrw and an external hard disk. The last item, external hard disk was the one causing the problem for me. Since this hd is assigned a seperate drive, my 995 would not show up. Then after searching the web, I found out that this was the cause of my problem. Then I removed my hd and connected my 995 to the usb. That's it. My camera showed up as a new drive. So, if you already have another drive letter assigned due to something you have plugged in to your USB port like a hd or card reader, remove it and plug in your camera. Hope this helps.

when I had the problem with the IBM USB memory key. My cardreader only shows up as drive G: in DOS and Thumbsplus, but not in Explorer or in MY COMPUTER. It does, however, show up as G: on my laptop with WIN98! The camera does not show up as any drive at all....

In Explorer, I can access the pics thru Nikonview> DigitalCamera> 100Nikon but not the INFO.TXT file.
Puters certainly are a love/hate relationship!

I guess you might have already enabled info.txt in your camera. If not, go to manual mode, enter set-up and scroll all the way down till you go to set-up 2. Here, you will see the option info.txt See that this option is set to "On" and not "Off"

Shafak

Sandi, I forgot that you could see info.txt while using a cardreader. So, ignore the previous posting. Anyway, do check and see whether the camera has gone back to default setting (Default :- info.txt = no) I have NikonView 4. I never used it before. I just simply opened to see if I could get any information from this program. Well, even this version doesn't show info.txt in the folder.

Shafak

Thanks Shafak for all your input, this problem has me perplexed beyond belief! The camera is fine and I guess it's just something I have to live with. I always use the USB enabled card first (as that one I can download the INFO.TXT file from), then switch to the Apacer cards as #2 & #3. I'll wait for the card prices to drop some more in Canada here and then just load up on some more USB cards and forget about NikonView.
Let me know if there's anything I can ever help you with, now or future,

NikonView just does not provide access to the INFO.TXT file. I actually think this is mentioned somewhere buried deep in the documentation (could be wrong...) But you can't use NikonView to get it.

You say that only your LEXAR works in your card reader... what card reader is it? A CF card reader should read any CF card whether it's USB enabled or not. Unless you're talking about the LEXAR USB cable that plugs directly to their own USB enabled cards...

Dave, thanks for the info that NikonView can't read INFO.TXT

Yes, I'm using a Lexar Jumpshot cardreader that plugs into my USB port on my PC. Do you mean that other card readers can read all cards, whether USB enabled or not? That's big news to me! DUH! Guess what I'm buying today??? LOL

Sandi...This technique was posted by someone else here so it's not my idea. I didn't know you could use the camera as a card reader. First disable Nikon View at startup. Plug USB into camera, turn camera on, go the "My Computer" and it will show up as "removable disk drive (E on mine)" which is exactly what an outside card reader does. You then drag the files and info to wherever and then delete file from your card right there. This might get you what you want. Worth a try!...Dave

that's exactly what I've been TRYING to do but.... as said earlier, the camera does not show up as a drive in My Computer. Just ain't there! In ThumbsPlus, my Lexar Jumpshot cardreader shows up as drive G when a card is inserted into it. When the camera is plugged in and ThumbsPlus starts up, it does not show the camera anywhere as a drive. Can only access the camera card contents thru Explorer thru NikonView> DigitalCamera> 100Nikon folder. GRRRRRRRRRRRR!

Also, the INFO.TXT file provides more details about photo structure than in the EXIF file. Some folks think it's the exact same info.... it's not. Been there, done that. Now pulling hair out!

More comments from some folks,

thats what i'm saying the 990 doesn't support that mode, i can't help it if you aren't believing or reading what i'm recommending to you, go bang you head all day long trying to get the 990 to mount as drive, its not going to happen its a still image device and not a mass storage device

Correct me if i'm wrong but this is the info contained in the info.txt file
for one picture ?

Sandi...When I first got CP995, got the advertisement for Jumpshot for 19.00 called to order, but after conversation with rep was told Jumpshot reader will only read Lexar cards. So I passed...don't know if this has any bearing on your situation. Incidently, I presently am using Nikon View 4, when I download thru Nikon View, I changed folder destination to a folder called I created within My Pictures folder called Digital Camera. After the download, I go to ACDsee which by default opens the My Picture folder which has the Digital Camera Folder in it, click on it and there they are. I never have to open Nikon View. I preferr this to constantly removing the card from the camera. Hundreds of card removals has got to cause some wear to the rather filmsy card door and the camera card pins and card itself....Dave

one more thought Sandi, do a search on this forum for "do you prefer factory 995 software or card reader" Nov. 16, and find the remark from Slugo, he is the one that informed of using camera as card reader...Dave
