Thinking of maintaining my photos on one of these. What are some pluses and minuses of both. For a pay site, I want to get the most for my money. I want friends and family to be able to access easy and possibly order prints if they desire plus easy uploads.

Ehrn I was looking. I had trouble with both site. I emailed support in both. Smugmug got me going, pbase never replied. The problem was my dsl modem , but at least smugmug helped me trouble shot and solve the problem

why do you want to pay ? there must be some free sites.i found one,but it's in german.i don't know if this site exists in english, too.it's absolute free and u got 1GB of free space.this is pretty cool to me.i post the link, maybe u can try it.it's pretty self-explanatory.you can't do much wrong. you don't even give them ur adress.just a name,a user name and a password and a email adress.then u can go and upload ur pictures.u can arange the pics in "sets"..thats all.maybe u want to try it.u can also use a translater for the words, that u maybe don't know.
here's the link to the free online photoalbum

I am in the process of gradually moving my pictures from Pbase to SmugMug, for three main reasons: (1) SmugMug has unlimited storage, (2) because of the unlimited storage I consider SmugMug to be a backup of all my photos (and you can order backup DVDs from them for an additional cost), and (3) SmugMug allows visitors to order prints. The main disadvantage to SmugMug is the bandwidth limits (monthly limits vary according to the plan chosen).

I'm in a roller coaster club, and many of our members have asked to get prints of pictures I have taken of them riding a roller coaster, so that was my #1 reason for moving.

Having said all of the above, I have been quite happy with both services. I'd encourage you to take advantage of their free trials and see which one you'd prefer.

I use smigmug to share photos with family that are located in Asia and North America. I Find smugmug great with extreme ease of use and lots of ability to customize the site. I am even thinking of going to the pro-account to store video etc. Like a previous poster mentioned, I am using it to archive some of the pictures and it enables other family members to have access to the kids shots without having to take the time to email it to them.

I have been extremely satisfied and I chose smugmug over pbase because of the capacity limitations.

I have subscriptions to both sites. I put family photos on Smugmug and use Pbase for my collection of galleries and other photos.

Pbase is highly customizable and you have a lot of freedom on how you display your pages and photos. There are fetures on PBase that I like better. For example, the ability to determine how many pics display on a single page. If I had to keep one it would probably be PBase.

I decided and went with Smugmug. What sold me is the ability to put as many phots on w/o worrying about how much space til i run out. I like the layout too. One thing that kills me is that it takes forever to upload my pictures. Im guessing that this is because of the size. 5-7 megapixels shots are bound to take a while. I just wish I knew how to change a whole file into smaller sized photos w/o altering the original shots. Anyone have some tips?
