Which camera was your first SLR?

What a honey! I still have it and it still works. It has the Super Multi Coated Takumar 50mm f/1.4 lens, which is at this moment undergoing "de-yellowing" on my windowsill.

I love my Pentaxes!

I actually learned the basics using a borrowed Olympus OM2 - a beautiful camera but I couldn't afford a new one when I had to return it after about 6 months. Instead I bought a second-hand Pentax KX in London around 1980, which came with an almost mint 50mm 1.4 lens. I mainly used it until I got a DS last year. The guy who sold me the KX said it was 'virtually indestructible' and he was right. I lugged it everywhere, from the beaches of Corfu to the Swiss Alps and the wilds of the Scottish Highlands. It works as well today as the day I got it, and it has only ever been serviced once.

Asahi Pentax Spotmatic II Black Body, 1972 purchased in Kwajalein, Marshall Islands. 4 primes including 50 mm macro, 85 f1.8, 28 mm f? and 300 f4. All stolen in burglary when we moved to Los Angeles in 1980. Took thousands of slides waiting to be scanned.

Replaced by ME Super with less spectacular glass followed by PZ1 with FA50mm f1.7 and 28-105 power zoom and finally, FA*85 f1.4.

Now about 1 yr into DS with minor case of LBA (which I never admit to).

Be well,

I was bought a pre-owned AE-1 with 50mm/1.7 for my 16th birthday. I really loved using that camera. Shutter priority and manual mode. Used it till the shutter failed about 6 years later. Then I moved through a couple of minolta dynax and decided to go Pentax for my DSLR thanks to the large viewfinder, small size and lens compatibility.

Honey Pentax H2, bought used in 1966 when I was 16. It came with a
wonderful Pentax Super Takumar 55mm. F1.8 lens. Here's one of my
favorite images from that camera, taken in 1968.

Have been enjoying this read, but I have to stop and say "What a great shot" and from almost 40 yrs ago!
'This is not that serious.....let's all have fun.'

Great thread!

My first (D)SLR was/is my current camera, the Pentax *ist DL, which I've had for a couple of months now. It's my third digital camera since I bought my first one six years ago. (I went from a Nikon Coolpix 2500 to a Panasonic FZ1 to the Pentax). Before digital, I shot with inexpensive (non-SLR) film cameras, and not very successfully! ;)

...was my first SLR, but it's not the camera I used to learn photography.

I started with a Brownie 127 at the age of 10; followed by a secondhand Ilford Sportsman as I entered my teens, then a s/h Voigtlander Vito C. So my learning about photography over the early years - and my first evening class on the subject - was done with a separate hand held exposure meter. I remember not feeling rich enough to buy an OM1 when I started to want an SLR; my bank balance was finally strong enough about the time the ME Super became really popular, so that's what I bought.
I just want to know with which SLR(or DSLR) did you learn photography?
Me it was the venerable K1000 at the school,i was 18 years old

... first was a Contaflex - a SLR without a changeable lens! And you had to wind it to get a a view through the viewfinder after an exposure, because the mirror only returned to it's working position with the winding. My second was a Pentax Spotmatic ...

K1000 with M50/2 early 80's/late 70's when I was about 16.

M28/2.8 and K135/2.5 some years later, before the K135 I had a something 80-200 but sold it as it was very sensitive to flare.
Then a M40-80/2.8-4.

Much later a P30 which was stolen with the M40-80 (not very sharp anyway) after some years, had to replace it quickly by a used MEsuper with a M35-70/2.8-4, meter turned out not to be reliable (it could be done by working the main switch), bought another MEsuper.
A used M50/1.4 somewhat later.
A M40/2.8 in '95.
A DS with 16-45 in 2005.

A SuperA with a M50/1.7 (for EUR70! total) to make use of the 16-45 on film in 2005.
A FA35/2 last week.

Apart from the 80-200 and the goods stolen I still have everything, even the defective MEsuper (for spare parts). Used the MEsuper for quite some time. Now I almost only use my DS with all the M/K lenses.

So Pentax from the start! Reason to choose Pentax over C at that time was the glass being at least equal quality but cheaper. Overall I think that is still true. N was far too expensive those days, I did not even look at it. I still have the C brochure.

My actual first SLR was my father's Miranda I was allowed to borrow, the K1000 I paid with my own money after saving more than a year. My father bought a K1000 -and still uses it- after his Miranda lenses got sticky apertures for the 2nd time. The body was still ok the last time I handled it some years ago.
