on my 1DM2n - there seems to be no difference between 1st and 2nd curtain sync. both ways, flash fires at the beginning of the exposure... is there something unique for this to work?

n/t

I've got the 580ex... don't see a custom function to set it on the flash.

Can anybody tell us a good reason to use the 1st curtain, which is the default setting ?

When using ETTL in Canon, there is preflash that fires to set the flash exposure. With 2nd curtain sync, at normal flash shutter speeds, it is difficult to see the flash firing prior to the 2nd curtain releasing. Try using and exposure time of 1 second as a test. You will see the preflash, then the shutter will open, and right before it closes the flash will fire grab the shot.

This allows you to have light trails behind the subject and not in from of the subject. ie. a moving car with the headlights on.

Tony...

The only flash I'm getting is at the beginning of the exposure... even with the flash set to manual(not ETTL) 1st and 2nd curtain act the same.

The custom function on the camera if for ETTL flashes that don't support 2nd curtain themselves. For flashes that do support 2nd curtain, the flash setting (1st or 2nd) overrides the camera's setting.

So push the little button on the back of the flash that has the lightning bolt - H (high speed sync) and the three arrows (2nd curtain sync) until you get the 2nd curtain sync icon on the display (the three arrows).

Got it?

Oh, if you ask me how to set HSS and 2nd curtain at the same time, I'm going to give you the funniest look I can over the web and make you figure out why you can't do that! ;-)

Uh, sorry there Johnny... it IS a custom function... #15(on the
camera)... so much for sheese... :)
Why does everyone need a reading lesson around here? Yes, I know it is a custom function on the camera. If you read the post I was responding to you will see the person was asking how to set it on the FLASH. And it is NOT a custom function on the Canon Speedlite 580EX. You were saying?

Thanks Lee Jay for your response... that's the answer I was looking for...

Yes, I know it is a custom function on the camera. That was stated in a previous thread. There are custom functions on a Canon Speedlite 580EX, too, but setting it up to use second curtain flash is not one of them.

Of course. There's a flash prority over the camera in setting 2nd curtain. If you set it in flash it doesn't matter camera's setting. I don't understand how people with such equipment like RichW don't know about it.

Well you can't actually USE HSS and 2nd curtain at the same time, but I find it a pain that the switch makes them mutually exclusive.

It would suit me fine to have both options set at the same time.

Outside in bright light I use Av and HSS for fill flash.

In low light I could still use Av, the shutter would slow below the point where HSS has any meaning, and the 2nd curtain would kick in without having to change the setting on the flash. It does no harm to have HSS option set in low light, it's just ignored.

Or am I getting a funny look from you? :-)

Nope! What you said makes perfect sense and you obviously understand what's going on.
