I'm about to purchase the following to use with my Pro90:

Gitzo G2220 tripod
Giotto MH1001 ball head
Bogen 3245 monopod
bogen 3265 ball head

I will be retiring soon and will be (hopefully) taveling, hiking and just plain having fun. But as I do this will be taking pictures along the way. Want to make sure I have what I need, or think I need, while still working. I'm thinking the tripod and monopod each have there place and would be useful to me. But as a newbe, just not sure.

My questions is this--am I getting something that will not be used, in your opinion, and just gather dust? Let alone the cost. I guess what I'm saying is, will I end up using one more then the other? Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Mike

I just wanted to move this up front in hopes of you experts providing some comments.

I don't use my tripod nearly as much anymore since I got my Pro90, due to the IS lens. I find myself using it more for things like night shots, fireworks, and panoramas. Speaking of panoramas, if you plan to make some you might want to consider a pan head instead of ball head. And unless you do a lot of sports or animal photography where you might need to constantly change positions, a monopod might not be so useful.

I'm not sure if you meant to only address the issue of tripods, but since you titled this "Accessories", there are a number of other accessories I would recommend for the Pro90, and I think most of these have been addressed in previous posts if you search on the same subect.

Thanks for the input. I have found that most of the pics I blur are in low light. I thought a tripod and/or monopod would be good for that and other situations. But I would hate to spend the money and not use them.

Again thanks

Mike,

I'm not sure why you are considering 2 ballheads, but let me recommend that if you want as much mobility as possible, go light. Purchase a ballhead that will support the camera firmly, but stay as small as possible. You say you intend to hike. Instead of a monopod, buy a walking staff with a camera mount on the end. They are aluminum, adjustable, and will serve a double purpose. Top the staff off with a good ballhead and you are rocking and rolling. The Gitzo tripod is excellent, but if you are using it only ocassionally it is probably overkill. Bogen tripods are also very good, very sturdy, and will save you a few dollars. Buy a 3-way head pan head for it and you have the ability to take panoramics as well as the other photo opportunities. Hope this helps.

Hi,

I also have Pro90 and I also blur in low light. But that low light isn't very low. The cloudy weather is enough. At least I found the person who tells about Pro90 something I can feel myself. Do you use auto mode? For me it is a bad camera until I learn the photography. People who say that Pro90 is great camera usualy don't use Auto mode :)) If I shoot full auto mode then pictures a way too dark. If I disable flash the camera sets long exposure time and pictures are too blurry. But I am not going to buy a tripod. I just can't believe this camera can't do better. I think it's auto mode is stupid. I will experiment with manual settings.

Best regards and happy shooting!,

Thanks for the info. I have not heard of a walking staff. Where do you get them? Also do you feel pan heads are better then ball heads on tripod?

I bought a very cheap "no-name" tripod, and use the IR or Self Timer to take low-light shots - then as long as there is no movement nearby the tripod doesnt need to be so sturdy.

Just a thought - but hey, if you can afford the best, buy the best!

The reason I get blurred pictures, in low light, is that I can't hold still enough. When camera is braced pictures are fine. I have had no problems on cloudy days. The pro90 seems to be working fine and only problem is me. Just need to learn how to use it and what accessories I need and don't need.

Mike,

Try rei.com for the hiking staff (very good business to deal with) and top with a Slik Mini Ball and you have a good setup for the woods and mountains (hiking). If you use a tripod, my setup is a Bogen 3228 topped with a 3030 pan head. Heavy enough to be stable in the wind, but light enough to carry on short excusions. The pan head is essential for panoramics.

Thanks for the info. I'll give them and look. It sounds like something very useful. As you get older you appreciate all the help you can get. And, I think the walking staff will do that.

Again thanks.
