My first 350D & RAW Shots! Please critique

Ok ... here is what I did.

I have the JPG I got from capture one. I used photoshop to export it for web size. This is the pictures you see here. Now if I put this side-by-side with original JPG (the big size one), here is how different they look. This comparison was generated by putting them side-by-side and capturing the screen. The top one is my choice of color. The lower one is what people see when I resize and publish the pics. HELP. Please click on the link, it is a tiff file.

Kevin,

Thanks for the encouraging remarks. I felt so bad about the pictures after posting them that I thought... ok maybe stick with JPG (not that there is anything wrong with that).

Cheers,

Rami

I totally agree with you all here. RAW is amazing once you learn how to use it well ( there is nothing that special about it). If I want to take a quick snapshot .... yeah I use the green button BAK talked about ..... but when I need a take a PHOTOGRAPH I definitly use RAW. Owning a DSLR and leaving it on the green button is a total waste of money. Its like owning a 3.8ghz Dual Core CPU just for Excel, going to Rome and not visiting the pope :-) ..... going to Amsterdam and not smokin a spliffy (just kidding).

And I like your sense of humor

Hi Rami,

Well,,,, thanks. I must say, you should not feel bad about your photos at all!!!,,, they are very nice.

In any event, I strongly advocate shooting RAW, and I am glad that you tried it, and hoprefully continue doing so!!!,,,and I look forward to seeing more of your photographs.

I think you have an eye for good composition, something that many have a hard time with. Your photos are beautifull.

I too find the colors to be dull a bit viewed from my monitor, and I'm sure it has to do with your post processing. I'd suggest checking and making sure that your camera is set to capture the pictures in Adobe RGB (you'll find that in the menus) as Adobe RGB as a wider color gamout than sRGB. I know mine is set to A RGB, although I'm not sure if it makes a difference when we shoot RAW.

You already have what is most important in taking pictures; an eye for good composition, and you also have a good understanding of proper exposure. The problems your experimenting are minimal and you will rectify this very quickly with the help from more experienced people than me, so don't despare, your on the right track :)

I am talking about the exact same JPG file, not the RAW. So the
JPG looks nice in iPhoto or whatever image browswer. That same
file, I view it through a the web browser and the image looks flat.
So this is all AFTER the conversion from RAW to JPG. I use Capture
One from phase one for my image conversion. As I said, I had an
initial very positive impression of the outcome, that is until I
uploaded the images. They suddenly look flat.
You need to develpoe the RAW files to web output or set the main output to sRGB. the jpgs will then look the same when you up load them
I use C1 and had this problem when i first started.

Ah I did a little testing and it seems that when you leave your raw converter to Adobe RGB (use this for print for a wider gamut). Then importing this into photoshop (it will ask to convert it to your normal sRGB space) and you let it be at Adobe RGB I guess. When I save for web the colors look desaturated even in the preview.
Then I convert the image to sRGB then resave for web, the colors are correct.

Go to photoshop menu -> Edit -> Color settings. See if it is set to Adobe RGB or sRGB IEC61966-2.1.

If it is set to adobe RGB, use edit -> convert to profile and convert it to sRGB with intent set to perceptual. Then save for web.

Hope this helps!

BTW I like your photo's a lot with the processing that you intended! A little fill in flash would have helped in the first image though, her eyes are a bit too dark. Keep it up like this and shoot in RAW :)

No need for that if he just outputs sRGB from C1.

Ok... Thanks to all for your help. I changed a couple of things. In C1, I made the output color space as sRGB, whereas it was set to Default Camera Setting (which I thought would produce sRGB). I also changed the photoshop color setting to sRGB. I did a quick test and I think now what I see in the browser is that same as my, say Bridge. Thanks all again.

Nice shots! Is that 5th one (with the yellow cluster of blooms) a Leatherleaf Mahoney plant? Interesting, looks just like the ones that I have in my flower bed here.

You are right.

It was absolutely ridiculous for him to use RAW in the first place.

Thanks for the support.

Re> lol then why do stock photo companies want RAW files...

Why or why is it so difficult to find someone with enough reading comprehension to actully understand context?

BAK

I can't find any useful informtion you provided to the person looking for assistance.

But I do not that you contribute to misleading him.

BAK

And that is because .... ??? !!!

To use/not use something can only be described as ridiculous / sensible if you know the reasons behind why it wes used. You have no idea why I shot RAW or what were my objectives when I took those pictures. Given that, it is quite ridiculous to make a statement such as the one you made.

Regards,

Rami

Sorry I didn't. It just came right after a similar, but 'serious', comment so I just thought you were emphasising the point.

Cheers,

Rami
