Dear Customer, Thank you for sending e-mail. Regarding your query, we would like to inform that movies recorded with = EX-Z850 may appear having much static noise and jaggy due to shooting co= nditions and other factors. This is because of increased resolution. Unfortunately we do not have any firmware for now. Please change the settings to Normal as a video mode, noise and jag will= reduce as compared to HQ mode. The process of making movie of EX-Z850 differs from EX-Z750. On comparin= g Normal mode movie of the two, they look almost the same. It does not a= ppear much jag remarkably because of low resolution whereas; HQ mode mov= ie of EX-Z850 tends to become much jaggier by high resolution. Your kind understanding on this handling will be much appreciated. Kind regards, Please do NOT send your next inquiry directly to our mail address. Hmm.. They say the issue is due to the larger video size? Doesn't the Z750 have the same resolution sizes and MPEG4? Am I missing something here? It's odd that Casio would think we are not smart enough to see thu this.

This maybe a novice question, but would the new anti-shake have anything to do with it?

I totally agree with you and sent my protest to Casio. This was their answer and because I was not convinced nor satisfied I have sent another message to another site they gave me and announced that I will proceed against them according to the law if.... This may be a procedure that we should consider.

I think we could build a web site for protecting this video issues of Z850. All this website is collect our Z850 owner names & display onto the pages.

Forward this URL to Head of the Casio & let them see how many people is waiting their Z850 firmware upgrade to adjusting this terrible video issue. Or we could get a free upgrade/exchange to next Z950.

Any suggestion!

since this was a stop ship bug and casio did not respond fast, i did not think it was a firmware issue. they could have added some filtering, but that would drain the battery. they could recall the cameras and replace the chip, but i do not think they would do that.

you may think the next model would be better. but, it all depends to the hardware components chosen. for some strange reason, better image did not yield to better video.

Day 2 (sent around diner time on Tuesday) and still no response from Casio. How long does it take for their cust service on line response? lol

The more I read their statement, the more concerned I get. It doesn't sound like a simple firmware fix - and if they stopped shipment, look out.

I just watched a clip of 750 video on a site - AMAZING! Makes you really want this feature!

If it is hardware, and they don't fix it for me, I may have to do a Costco return thing...

that casio stopped shipping the 850 due to the video issue? If so, this really worries me because that probably means it is a hardware issue, and if so i may be screwed. Because i dropped mine and while i bought replacment parts i did not order the rear face because it's $50 and the nicks are very tiny there. But it would probably cause them not to accept the return.

Wow! there you go. the 850 for movies is a dud and will stay a dud. I'm keeping my wonderful z750 video maker!!!!!!!

did i miss something? where does it say casio stopped shipping the z850?

My technical knowledge of cameras may not be huge, but to blame it on a different resolution sounds very suspicious to me. Are they referring to the resolution of the sensor? Does this mean that a higher resolution sensor changes the way a 640x480 movie is made?

I am still very surprised that they let through a camera with such an obvious defect. Some are definitely worse than others, though.

Does it not depend more on whether the MPEG encoding is done in hardware or software rather than anything to do with the CCD? If its a hardware encoder then obviously a firmware update is of no use. If however its software encoded then there should be no reason why a firmware update shouldnt be able to sort it out?

Let's not forget there's a whole bunch of other 8MP cams with stairstepping problems.

Did they halt shipments with those? No.

Did firmware fix them? No.

nuff said.

Geesh. Several of the posts in this thread sound like "All your base are belong to us". And what is a "stop ship bug?"

I'm not sure any of this is true. The official Japanese response used the term "jag", "jaggy", and "jaggier"? Sounds fishy.

Can we assume then that it's a CCD problem (since that can be a common component between different manufacturers?)

The Z850 problem is an hardware one. Please read an official position.

Dear Customer, Thank you for sending e-mail on EX-Z850. Regarding your inquiry, compares EX-Z850 with EX-Z750, the jag and noise= of dark part are different. This is because of difference of number of pixels, or device itself. The= refore unfortunately it is impossible to change by firmware. With warm regards, Please do NOT send your next inquiry directly to our mail address. Our "casio e-mail system" cannot take in your e-mail if you do so. What should be a concerted action to protect our rights/legal expectations?
Something MUST be done to have Casio replacing all faulty models.

Did they also have defective HQ modes that were far far far worse than thier NQ mode? No
