Hi all,

This sample photo was taken with G2 at ISO 50. 0.5 sec shutter speed was used. Noticeable noise was observed across the picture. Is this normal? What's a good way to reduce this kind of noise during and post the shot ?
Thx a lot.

You definetly need more light. Your picture was taken at 0.4 sec hence the noise and blur. Nobody can stand for that long without even blinking. I'm not sure but I think the in-camera noise reduction only quicks in exposures of 1" and longer. If you have an external flash try bouncing it off the celing.
Herbet.

I've seen people taking some G2 night scene shots with shutter speed as long as 3-5 seconds, the background was still quite clean with minimal noise. I wonder how they managed to do that ...

Yes, that's normal noise for that sort of shutter speed and low light. The G2's noise reduction doesn't kick in until exposures of 1.3 seconds and longer. But of course, at those speeds your subject won't be able to hold her pose easily. Therefore, you'd do better to opt for more illumination.

Precisely -because- their shutter speed was 3-5 seconds.

Shutter speeds 1.3 seconds and LONGER = noise reduction is applied
Shutter speeds 1 second and FASTER = no noise reduction applied.

Would be nice if Canon let us switch noise reduction on at faster shutter speeds, but they don't sadly.

On my G1 noise reduction sets in at 1.6sec, I imagine the G2 is the same.
I'v taken night shots up to 8sec with no noise.

ok, sounds like I have to live with it...
Any solution (noise reducer ?) to fix this photo ?

The noise reducer (g-Iso-r, is one such program,) http://www.fredmiranda.com/CanonG1_G2_pro90/index.html

reduces grain in the image caused by use of high ISO settings. This program is like unsharp mask in reverse, by identifying then maintaining the edges of detail while emphasizing gaussian blurr to the smooth areas.

What I see in your photo is quite a different noise, hot pixels, an occasional white or bright pixel surrounded by a smoother black. You can correct this in Photoshop using the clone stamp tool. Adjust the size of the stamp to fit and clone out each one, very tedious. Perhaps some one has a better approach?

When I saw such noise I went to Tv and increased my shutter to 1.6 sec and the hot pixels dropped over an order of magnitude. you are using a tripod, right? Otherwise both of you will add to the blur. Meanwhile your model will have a hard time holding still this long unless they are an accomplished mime. Try the 420ex bounced, works wonders.

Mib,

I agree with the previous answers, G2 can be a little noisy sometimes, but if you use a shutter speed just above 1.3 sec (noise reduction algorithm) it's much better.

Here a picture I took during the night (full dark outside), noise is ok.
