Well, now I've gone and done it! I'm probably losing it, but in a moment of impulsivity and weakness, I made the decision to upgrade to the Nikon CP5000 last night, sight unseen...and to sell off my CoolPix 990.

Gotta be honest...I'm a bit nervous. But reading the pre-release specs on the 5000, and the prospect of having 5MP in the palm of my hand was simply too tempting. Hopefully this camera doesn't come with any "major issues." I know it's safer to wait...but Nikon's really delivered on their Coolpix line and it just sounds soooo good!

I haven't researched the alternatives (such as the Sony f-707) too much yet, but will probably give'em a quick look before I place my order. If there are any other cameras I should be considering, I'd appreciate it if someone could post 'em. Trying to stay in the range of $1000.00 or less.

I'm a big fan of Nikon's Metering, and that's what made me go with the CP990 originally. I enjoy photographing nature and people. Used to shoot professionally, but now it's all for fun and my SLR hardly sees the light of day.

As for my CP-990, I'm afraid there's no turning back. I listed my "baby" on eBay last night for $1 with no reserve. Thought about going in today and canceling it but -- too late, there's already some bids. Ooooops!

Thanks Chris!

Tell me, who did you order your CP 5000 from? Did they give you an estimated ship date yet?

Also, did you give serious consideration to any other digicams other than the CP5000?

Mark
Don't be afraid, Mark!
Congratulations. I'm waiting on my CP 5000, too.

I've been thick in research for the past 3 days. I feel very confident that the CP 5000 is the best for my money, the high end of the consumer segment.

My serious alternatives were the Canon G2 and Fujifilm S1 Pro. I have Nikon SLR gear, so with the CP 5000 I can use my Nikon SB24, and with the S1 I'd have been able to use the lenses, too. I felt the CP5000 edged out the G2 due to flash compatibility and higher res. I was really close to getting the S1 (for $1k more used), but the 1.5 magnification ratio diluted the "Nikon lens compatibility" advantage -- I prefer wide angles.

No doubt I'll have a digital SLR within the next 2 years. The CP 5000 might just help me avoid spending the extra dollars for just a little bit longer...

Re: vendor/ship date, see my other post re: "Amazon release date." I'm expecting a box of 'toys' from them soon.

Have you been following the posts on the 707 on Sony Talk here at DPreview?

I believe you'd never be happy with what you get form the 707 compared with what you got from the 990...even though it has more pixels. The only thing I wish Nikon would add is low light focus assist! I wouldn't mind a faster than 2.8 lens either.

Depending on the reviews I will also be purchasing a CP5000. However I have no intentions of getting rid of my CP990. It has taken over 30,000 great photos for me and I see no reason I will not take 30,000 more with it.

Good Grief, Ken. How in the world do you shoot 30,000 pictures? I know.... one click at the time. Seriously, do you use it in business?
Jarrell
P.S. I'm waiting to see the serious reviews on the 5000 too.

That's exactly my plan. Although I'm not in a hurry to get the 5000 I do not plan to sell the 990. I still see it as an ideal camera for many situations. The pictures are teriffic. Good luck. Let us know everything once it arrives, please.

Mark,

Depending how attached to your SLR gear, trading it in is
always a viable option.

At the shop where I work we have had quite of SLR gear
traded towards Digital Cameras.

Of course, it depends on what value the shop gives you and
what value you put on your gear.

When I got my D1x everybody and there brother wanted to buy my 990 and assorted tele's. The answer was "no way!" I love my 990 and use it as a pocket camera and as a backup on jobs should the X die on me.

Are you the "REDZEBRA25" entry? On Ebay...

Or what is the item number you listed please.

Thanks.

That's no problem, really. My CP990 took about 25,000 pics until now, I bought it in Aug 2000. I use my cam for private purposes only. I hope that my CP990 will take some more 10000s shots.

Jarrell

No, I do not use my 990 for business. I do however have a lot of free time and go on shoots about 4-5 days a week with major shoots on weekends. Lots and lots of places to take photos in SoCal.

Hi Mark. I'll be interested in what you will get for it. Last week was looking at ebay for the 990 and didn't see any go over $486 or thereabouts. I've ordered the 5000 also and plan on putting my 990 on ebay as well, but don't want to do it until I have new camera in hand. One reason I stayed with the Nikon is because of the SB-28 flash, don't want to give it up! I'm also selling my rollbar and AS-E900 multiflash adaptor. (retail $92) Wonder if that will let me sell it for more?

Ken,

I too live in Southern California. I've found Joshua Tree National Monument an interesting place to photograph and I'm hoping to get out to Death Valley/Mojave Desert. Where do you like to shoot?

Hi Patti,

I would think that would let you sell it for more. On Ebay, the bidding for my Nikon 990 is up to about $200.00 and if that's as high as it goes, that's what I'll be selling it for. :-) I took some great pictures with it and they print out great on my Epson 1270, but I'm ready to move on.

I also plan to list my Digital Wallet on eBay in the next couple of days and plan on looking for a microdrive instead to use with the CP5000.

Good luck to you there...

Mark
