POLL: 5D VF dust – encouraging all users who do NOT have this problem to post!

cheers

Vin

There were a couple of bits of dust on the screen, but they weren't a real problem - and turned out to be on the outside surface I later discovered whilst blowing dust out with a blower bulb!

I don't know how much of a problem it really is? People perhaps over emphising it?

Viewfinder Dust problem on 5D

I want to use a 5D but reading all the threads here and at Rob
Galbraith about the “eyelash-in-the-viewfinder” dust problems of
this camera, I’m having serious second thoughts. One of the reasons
I want to go FF is to have a bright viewfinder but I’ll rather have
a dim and clean viewfinder than a dirty and bright viewfinder. I
read that for some users the dust is so severe they cannot easily
see the 5D’s AF points. But for me much less dust would be an
annoyance in my daily use of the camera, both composing and
focusing.

The eyelash-in-the-viewfinder dust problem is presumably caused by
dust that has entered the camera during manufacturing and then
later moved around inside the camera until it eventually has
settled in a place where it can be seen in the viewfinder. Canon
has not made an official announcement on the issue so I only know
what I have read on the many threads.

Reading the threads on the 5D dust problems it would seem that a
lot of users find these problems so distracting that they send the
camera back to Canon to be cleaned since the only way to clean it
is to disassembled the camera. Unfortunately it does seem that
quite a lot of users even experience viewfinder dust problems after
the camera has been serviced by Canon.

I encourage all 5D users who read this thread to place themselves
in one of the following categories below (I suggest that you write
what category you belong to i.e. 1), 2) or 3) in the subject line
and write more in the message space IF you want to elaborate e.g.
how much or for how long you have used the 5D). Especially I
encourage users who have not had any viewfinder dust problems to
put down the “1)” in the subject line since I suspect that users
without problems are less prone to participate in writing about
something as trivial as a dust free viewfinder. So please put down
your 1) to let us all know that your 5D viewfinder is without dust!

Here are the categories to place in the subject line for the 5D
camera/cameras you have been using:

1) No viewfinder dust problems

2) Minor viewfinder dost problems (e.g. something was there but
then it went away or it is so small that it doesn’t really bother
me but if you are a perfectionist concerning your gear, you might
be bothered by it)

3) Severe viewfinder dust problems (it bothers me and I think many
users would be bothered by this, more or less)

It seems fairly simple to vacuum out these strands, but i'm not sure the best place to do it. the viewfinder seems fairly sealed, as does the plate above the focus screen.

I was thinking of making an attachment for my vacuum out of a drinking straw to remove the dust.

...you can read my whole review of the 5D here: http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=296 (mine is the one by joe mama).

Bottom line: I hate the dust, but love the camera so much that it would not stop me from getting it again. And, in reality, it's not that big of a deal. But yeah, I hate the dust. : )

You guys are such worry warts!

Hey, I have news for you... you also get dust on the body as well! Yep.. You will get dust on the body too.. it will happen.. I sure hope you don't freak out over this either..

The 5D is a tool. I use mine and my other bodies as tools, and yes, they will collect dust, and finger prints, and other stuff all over them, inside and outside, and that won't stop me from buying another, because I actually USE my tools to do what they were intended for, TAKING PICTURES with them!!

Get a grip!

Who are you to tell folk that have spent a large chunk of cash on supposededly a top notch tool which has some defect , to get a grip ? If the problem doesnt affect you , good and well , but it does affect others.

There is obviously a VF dust problem in some 5d's , my 2 models of the 5d (my first 5d died on me) have/had a lot of VF dust right out the box which is extremely distracting when focussing or composing , We arent talking a spot of 2 here!!

This is abnormal as not one of my other DSLR's had this problem and is indicative of very poor QC. This dust CANNOT be removed by blowing it out. Apart from which Sensor dust also seems more of a problem on the Canon 5d. To fix VF dust the camera has to be sent back to a repair facility. If you have a 5d with an xxxx1 serial no , it too has to be sent back to a repair facility (more QC problems?) to fix a potential malfunction . This is a major disruption for some and can take a week or more in countries other than the USA - you can't shoot diddly squat if your camera is in for "repair".

I really cant stand the smug type posters who respond to other ppls concerns with rubbish like "get a grip" or get a life or just ignore defects and go and take pics.

The nicest thing about smacking your head against the the wall is.......The feeling you get when you stop

There's a big difference between a few pieces of dust from normal use and hundreds of particles--particles left from messy factory assembly--covering the focusing screen. I believe this thread is attempting to access how many black sheep are hiding in the fold.

I feel fortunate that I got a clean 5D. However, those that have focusing screens covered with hundreds of particles are rightfully upset. I have feeling that most 5D bodies are fine. It appears a batch of early bodies have a large amount of industrial leavings in the nooks of the mirror box, leavings that fall onto the focusing screen and sensor at every small disturbance.

I recall in 1998 a bad batch of EOS 3 bodies that suffered from underexposure in low light. Although Canon fixed the problem by early 1999, old stock remained in the stores long enough to cause problems for years.

Quack!

I have savings and particles in my camera straight out of the box. The 5th digit in my serial number is 3. One thing is for sure this debris is not coming from the outside and there lies the problem. This unique debris was introduced at the factory. If would have acquired a few dust specs after 6 months of use from lens changes ect. that is one thing but my unit has barely seen the light of day. The people that are saying "get a grip" are so extremely off base. What they are saying to is "I paid for a Pizza with three topping, and had it delivered with only one" I call the pizza place and demand my toppings and they say "Get a grip, Its good pizza, eat it and shut up" Excuse me I think not. I don't care what income bracket or level of photography you are at. The only people I know that have no respect for $3000 are 20 year olds trying to act like "big shots" that need to be kicked out of the house and pay for their own roof.

I think one more piece of information would be helpfull in this poll. People should state what the 5th digit of there 5D serial number is. We may be able to find some common ground from that. It would allso help those contemplating a new purchace of what batch to avoid.

20 year customer of Canon SLRs and currently on my 5th DSLR. I currently own a 20D and a 1Ds as well. Both viewfinders are spotless after use in rather harsh conditions. I purchased the 5D for its combination of size and FF capabilities. I have never had this problem until the 5D.
