So far I've found out it's a ripoff, it doesn't have a hood included, I won't being buying one and it's no better than the old version other than focussing a bit faster.

Unless you're kidding of course. In any case, people who didn't follow that thread to the end might believe your mislead (and misleading) view.

It seems the lens does come with a hood, the OP of that thread only looked at the BH website, in which the lens was wrongly listed. Then someone emailed BH, and the rep only looked at the website, so he told that person that it didn't come with a hood. Then someone emailed Canon, and the Canon rep it seems he looked at the BH website too.

But the people who actually bought it in the US and elsewhere say otherwise.

i have one in my hand and it did came with both case and hood, not much diffrence between II and I. II makes more noise, i can't tell if it is any faster

Never really understood how the focus-by-wire was supposed to work. Any differences in mk II here?

Photography is all about looking.

We already know about the AF speed of mkII, but:
Does it have the same gradual blur kicking in around the focal plane?
Does it have the same subtle desaturation effect in the background?
Anyone to see the effect of the new coatings?

Yes the response was a joke, but other than the hood what is misleading. Optically it's no better and it only focusses a bit faster and it IS a ripoof at current prices. Those with the original version shouldn't lose any sleep about whether to update and should being laughing all the way to the bank when they want to sell one.

I'd also want to buy that lens, and I would pay, say, $150 more for ring USM, that's about it of what's new I guess. I am hoping they don't discontinue the old one at least until I can buy it. My comment was just about the hood.

The only things that had me holding back from buying the mk I version of this lens were the things they "fixed" in the mk II version. I was thrilled when it was announced, until I saw a price tag that threw me for a loop. Still, I was debating it, but I really haven't seen any positive reviews of the mk II lens. I realize the price tag has a lot of people upset, but that aside, has anyone seen a positive comparison with the mk I lens?

The coatings and the circular aperture blades. I don't know how "circular" they are compared to the 1st version, but it should give more uniform bokeh. I guess you'd need to see side-to-side comparisons. Me, I just ordered a mkI from Amazon. They don't have it in stock, but say they're getting more come may or something.
