Man, i was excited to take my new 5D out for a spin, but just to find out a big black spot on every picture!

100% crop here:

Talking about dampening my enthusiasm!

since you shot that at f8 and it's visible at that aperture it must be a big piece of dust. I didn't get a chance to look for dust on my 5d because the UPS man was late! I won't be shooting the sky at f22 though because I never stop down that much.

You have spec of dust on your sensor. That is normal on a DSLR. Learn to clean your sensor.

Viewfinder particles and debree form the factory in the viewfinder showing up with a persentage of 5D units that can only be repaired by canon factory service. If you are lucky you will not have this problem. A large percentage of units do.

No, it's not dust, it is 'goo' ... it happened to me too, i was really mad because i had never uncovered my sensor before, there's no way I could have done it, so it must have come from come from the inside of the camera. And I don't want to say how I got it off, but now I need to send the body in for a cleaning.. :(

What is 'goo'?

goo-gle says

GOO is a new type-based prefix syntaxed language that is simple, powerful and extensible.

Never seen that on my sensor.

I just bought a 5D (firmware 1.05 installed) at B&H Foto a week ago and the viewfinder is completely clean. Well, I had to blow off a couple thread-like particles on the underside of the focusing screen (probably from the packing material). The sensor had a single tiny dust bunny but it's only visible at F16+ sky shots so I'm not sweating it. I know several people with 5D--live persons not forum posters--and they haven't had any problems. Unfortunately some units--early production?--shipped with plenty of factory dust.

Quack!

I finally had to send my in for servicing. When I first got my 5D it was fine, as I shot more and more, the more dust kept showing up. I have had the 10D, 20D and never had problems cleaning or just blowing off the dust. My 5D seems the more I blow the more I get junk on the viewfinder, I bet I had 20-30 little speck's or little things that look like hairs. Finally, it was just driving me nuts. You'd think a $3000 camera would not have issues like this.
