deciding between the Canon 30D and Nikon D200...
shooting low light 50% of the time
i prefer the menus and controls of the D200
prefer the weight and feel in my hand of the 30D

the weight and fit of a camera in my hand should be as crucial a consideration as anything else, right?

i mean, despite the going back and forth between canon and nikon fanatics, the one common thread seems to suggest that either camera will be very good for me and that either set of lenses will be very good... almost to a negligable difference...

thoughts on that statement?

thanks

Don't be afraid to consider offerings from other manufacturers as well. There ARE others out there you know besides Canon and Nikon.

Although there are some that would call my words Blasphemy...

Yes, feel and comfort are important factors.

Look at it this way.... given enough time and practice you'll be able to get wonderful results from either camera. However, there will be occasions when you need to take shots quickly and accurately - P&S on steroids if you like - and some of these will be once-in-a-lifetime opportunities that simply cannot afford to be failures.

So try to decide which of the two cameras handles most intuitively without demanding set-up input from you just for the sake of input. Remember, your task as a photographer is ultimately to take good photographs, not necessarily getting good at playing video games with the menu options.

Dont be making the choice even MORE difficult:) I personally decided not to buy Canon or Nikon and started looking at the smaller manufacturers, I like to be a little bit different... I think I have decided on Pentax as I have a couple of lenses and I like the look of the camera, but the others tempt me from time to time too.

Whats more important to you? Taking photographs that have great image quality, or taking photographs that are quality images?

especially in a hurry. Shutter, aperature, iso and focus - that's all there is when the chips are down.

Try changing that lens in realtime. Try futzing with WB, or which digital image tone color...bah. No wait! I want to switch my AE button to lock with second shutter. And pick the lower left quadrant focus point to have center wieghted -1.31 ev compensation. Damn! Missed the shot.

Hahahahahaha

It's the whole package. Frankly, I don't think the D200/30D quality is sufficiently different to be a deciding factor. They are both more than adequate. Any camera choice will result in trade offs. Just go buy one and take some pics.

Choosing a camera is easy..

1. Be sure of your deal-breaker miminum feature set

2. Compare photographic tests on this site of all applicable models

3. Narrow down to the last two

4. Go into a photo store and handle both of them.. It should be obvious within 30 seconds which one is 'right' for you.
