Hi all,

I'm new to this forum - well, I've been reading dpreview's forums extensively for quite a while now, but never posted a message.

I've seen beautiful work in here. I fear that my own production will not be on a par with what you are used to looking at, but I would very much appreciate any comment on the few photographs I now submit to you.

I also apologize in advance for any mistake while writing English, as I am a French guy! :)

I work with a 5D and 50mm f/1.4 exclusively. I am quite new to photography but do not appreciate being limited by my gear. :) Maybe I should have saved some euros but, well, you know... working with excellent gear is so enjoyable!

I have to give some more information about the pictures, I think.

I shot in RAW (as always should I say) and didn't do any post-processing except converting to B&W and, for the first picture, using the selection tool and layer tool to keep that blue colour you can see.

Well, maybe they're not worth a comment... or maybe I'm just too impatient - and I apologize for that. :)

I like the first one. I usually hate that effect, but the blue is very subtle.

Thanks Dustin. It's the first time I tried this and, well, I never thought I would do something like this one day!

Are you planning on finishing the processing and including sharpening the picture properly?

They have a sense of drama, but bland processing which detracts from the image. Are you comparing your camera to another camera where you are doing no processing on purpose? A finished picture would be more enjoyable to me at least.

Thanks Peter for commenting!
Well, actually I am not comparing anything nor planning to do anything else.

I am wrong for sure, if you ask such questions. Would you be kind enough to give me some directions?

Thanks a lot in advance!

First, you really should not save your photos as GIF. GIF only allows 256 colors. Use 80%-100% JPG for the Web and your shots will look much nicer.

I really like the first one and I usually don't like when people keep a little color on a BW. I could use a little sharpening though. I understand the mindset of keeping everything pure from the camera and not making it fake in PhotoShop. Done properly, post processing in CameraRaw & PhotoShop is no different than using a dark room with film.

I missed the GIF part. I don't know but those photos are rather depressing which might be the intent.

I wouldn't have noticed. except for the little dots of blue didn't look right on the tractor.

Welcome and beware. Being that people can say what they want with impunity you'll come across a few mean people. If you do, just ignore it and move on...

PS. As mentioned by other viewers, jpeg is better image compression for photographs. Gif lzw compression and color indexing is great for clip art type of images.

Hi Semorg! Thanks for your welcome message - and warning :).

I'll soon (within the next 24 hours I guess) replace the Gif by Jpeg pictures on my website and will be doing some more PP (such as USM and saturation adjustments) so that the pictures look better.

I liked the mood you created with your shots - take no notice of those who seem to feel that they never had to learn anything, and make derogatory comments.

As others have said, your next objective is probably to work on your post-processing skills.
Here's how:

Go to tutorials and 'Adjustment layers'
Keep up the good work!

Thanks David! I'll definitely take a thorough look at the tutorials. I have so much to learn!

I wish to thank you all again for spending some time on my "case". :)

I re-worked the post processing on the farm tractor photograph, how do you feel about it?

Thanks for your message. I just posted a new version with some sharpening applied and a better format (.jpg instead of .gif). Would you tell me what you think about it? (not enough sharpening I guess, but I tend to be very conservative with that). Thanks!
I think you will be pleased after some sharpening. Just keep your
original in case you don't like it.
