I am interested in purchasing a digital camera and have favored the C700 digital camera from Olympus. I have not been able to physically see one of the cameras or get any live reviews and was wondering what people who own the camera think of it. This will be my first purchase of a "real" camera for my personal use so I would like to make it an educated purchase. Thank you in advance.

You can find a lot of information on this camera by searching for C700 in this forum.

Well, for my own opinion, I love it and it could take some great quality photos. The only drawback is the Electronic View Finder which makes it difficult to focus at night.

I've posted some photos on my homepage, have a look!

The C700 is a fantastic little camera. I have take a zillion pictures with mine. However, if you have not done so, I'd suggest that you consider the C2100 as well. The C2100 is selling for about $500 right now and basically includes most of the extras that you would have to purchase seperately for the C700 such as a battery charger and batteries.

The C2100 is considerably larger than the C700, but it has image stabilization which can help you get a sharper image when you are at full zoom.

The only reason I point this out is that there are several people on this forum who have returned their C700 in favor of the C2100. I personally like my C700 and find it easier to use than my friends C2100. Look through this forum and find the likes and dislikes of each.

You asked for a live review.
I purchased the C700 back in May. I really like the camera. It has the
auto modes for the wife and kids. It has the manual modes, so that I
can be more creative. It has a 10x optical zoom. This is great. You

have to be careful with the auto ISO. The camera will bump this up high and produce grainy pictures.

Remember to get rechargeable batteries and have fun.

If you have a Costco near you, check there. They seem to be stocking the C700.

Between the C700 and the C2100.
C700 - smaller, manual white balance
C2100 - image stabilization, better low light focusing

Ask any of us. The camera we have is the best :)

I've got the C2100. Personally, I'd love to have a camera the size of the C700 and have manual white balance. I'll take the IS instead.

Your mileage will vary.

MacGary,

The 700 was my choice based on size, ease of use and zoom. If I were to afford two cameras, I would also own a 2100. The 700 is nice because battery life is good, and the USB hook-up to your computer shows as a second drive, so downloads are easy without a card reader. But i suggest getting a card reader anyway, to save battery life. I carry the 700 with me all day in a backpack, small and convenient. Auto mode is easy, Program mode is better, so you can control the ISO. I have taken some great night shots without much noise. C.A. (purple fringing) is a minor problem but easily fixed. No SDS as with 2100, (mostly a non issue these days). Get an extended warranty for the heck of it...Use an American Express Blue card and buy it where you like, then price match the interent cheapo stores, then get reimbursed.....or buy mine... :-). Good luck! Either choice is a good one. T.

Brians suggestion is very good one. I think the c700 is a great camera,
but for the same money you will get, imo, a better camera in the c2100.
I own bouth, You will save money as soon as you open the box.

A 2100 has some other advantage that is not mentioned in the above responds to your question.
  1. )The 2100 CCD is bigger it translates to a bigger pixel (the number of pixels the same). The bigger pixel size assumes the following advantages: cleaner colors, less noise, more charge per pixel. The 2100 pixel area is 246% of the 700 pixel. It is very significant.
  2. ) the mentioned above the Image Stabilization. It allows doubling the chance of a sharp image at shutter speeds below 1/200s and X10 zoom. For example with 2100 you would get 90 sharp images out of 100 and for 700 it would drop to 45 and the rest should go to garbage can.
  3. ) I also like that fact that the lens is a one piece (not retracting type). I has 49mm thread and allows direct installation of UV filter, polarized filter, X2 teleconverter, X0.5 wide converter, macro attachment.
Size is a controversial parameter. It is nice to have a smaller camera but it is more comfortable to hold and use 2100 I am a bicyclist and this parameter was a critical. However, after making many comparison photographs in a local CompUSA with both cameras I have selected 2100. It took another week to overcome the desire to exchange my 2100 for 700.

In the future I may consider an improved version of 700 like as a second camera.

The CompUSA really makes it sweet - a camera bag + 32M memory and included by Olympus a set of rechargeable batteries with a charger is a very nice gesture.

In general either camera is a good buy. You may, for example, consider an improved version of 2100 in the future as a second camera. -).

I heard Sears, which carries C700, will do a price match with any Internet offer you can find... Get a printout of the lowest price you can find and talk to the sales person... Also, if you use American Express (or some VISA) you can get a second year warranty for free. Check with your credit card company...

Having said that, I think C2100 is a better choice if you don't mind the bigger size. You may also want to consider E-100RS, which you may (or may not) get at Ebay (brand new) nowadays for $449, though they are running out fast...

There is a promotion for C700 on Olympus' site. Check out:

You get a 64MB Smart Card for free... That's neat!

Kin Lam,

I just ordered a c-700 on Nov. 19. Thanks for the info!!! I purchased a 128MB card already, but it will be nice to have an additional 64MB!

Well your best bet is to look at photos taken by both camera from simply people like and not posted by professional reviewer, this is your best chance to see what type of photos you can get.

Personally i saw good and bad photos from the C2100 and with the C700.

I saw many photo taken with the C2100 that were blured or not in focus and full or chromatic aberation. So it seam you can still get blurred photo even with the IS.

As for the CCD size, they are both 2.1mg and look at both camera sample images to compare the image quality.

here is my gallery if you wish to see, its from C700 camera:

Personally i can take much better pictures with my C700 than i could with my regular film SLR! and i mean much better!

I love the small size and i carry it all day on hiking trip and i am not tired.

When you think that some people will spend $$$ just to get rid of half a pound in hiking equipement...every once count :) For me the size was a major determining features and i found that i really don,t need IS as i rarely get blured picture at full zoom.

It's a great camera, the pictures are great, the features are great. It's nowhere near as bulky as the other 10x Optical Zoom cameras, however some of those feature "image stabilisation".

I think too much is made of the benefits of image stabilisation. If you're a serious enthusiast you may well be using a tripod or monopod anyway.

Not only that, but you can set a high shutter speed to combat any shaky hands.

Go for it. :)

Great Shots Daniella! I have a C2100 and your shots are as sharp (most of them sharper) than mine with IS. I think I am going to Sears to try that internet price matching deal (as a Xmas gift). With 10% off today, that might make the C700 $434 after adding shipping to a $409 internet price, and adding tax to the Sears discount..... and I'll keep the 64 meg card that Olympus is rebating.

Where exactly is that coming from????

Because the size of the ccd for the 2100 is 1/2 and the size of the C700 is 1/2.7 almots at big as the E20 which is 1/3....and the E10 is a 4mp.

dunno where you got that but it seam to me that the C700 has a bigger CCD. The best way to judge these 2 cameras is to look at samples! that's where no matter what people say...you will get the true picture :)

I have a C700 and never use a tripod...never! :)

I rarely come up with blurred picture and i use the full zoom handhelded all the time. I can say that i don't need the IS and i prefer the small size and features of the C700. I don't understand why so many people think the IS is so important...it may make a difference on a big and hard to handle camera as the C2100, but with the small and fast C700, its not even needed.

The 2100 CCD diagonal is1/1.7" and the 700 CCD diagonal is 1/ 2.7". The number of pixels is the same . As you can see it is very simple. The bigger pixel means greater charge for the same amount of light (if I can put it this way) and it means better signal to noise ratio. The re is another small 2100 advantage The SHQ mode compression for 2100 is 1/ 2.7 and for 700 is 1/3.4. It is not much but enough to be noticeable. The file size for 2100 is 1,400K and for 700 is 950K. You may not notice it on every image but you definitely notice it during color correction.
