We anticipate purchasing our first digital camera in the next month ot two. Much of what I've read in other publications seems to recommend the Nikon Coolpix 995 or the Olympus C-4040. I know the Nikon 5000 is about to appear. I would love to hear some advice from others who have no doubt been in the same place. Principal use would be family stuff, outdoors/scenery, vacations, sending to relatives via the internet, some editing and enlargement, printing.

I was in the same quandary as you about 18mo's ago. Bought a 2MP, a big mistake, since I was used to the 35mm resolution........ My next was a 3.3MP Casio QV-3000ex, that I have had for almost a year and I am extremely happy with most all of it's characteristics. (none of them (cameras) are perfect) Now that you can get it at ebay.com for about half of what i paid, it is a bargain. .........Do read the Reviews.

Read the STF about how people drooled waiting for the Sony F707, only to be disappointed with the problems associated with the model's first production run.

This probably happens with other makes too.

There will always be a new model around the corner and you need a camera now.

The holidays are a month away.

Get busy!

Hi,

I'm not sure if you want to step down a bit, but I just bought the Olympus C-3020 at 800.com for $499.99. In addition, there is currently a $25.00 instant rebate, a $100.00 rebate if you buy using the MSN Passport (account available for free from MS), and a $50.00 gift certificate to 800.com for spending over $500.00. This leaves the final price at:

$499.99
-$25 instant rebate
-$100 MSN Passport rebate
-$50 gift certificate
------
$325.00

I also bought this with the American express Blue card (they price match in the first 60 days).

Of course, you could use the same rebates towards one of the other cameras that you want (the gift certificate goes up to $75.00 for a $600.00 purchase, $100.00 for a $1000.00 purchase, and $200.00 for a $2000.00 purchase).

Olympus C-4040: $900.00 - $75 (gift certificate) - $45 (instant rebate) - $100 (MSN Rebate) = $680

Nikon Coolpix 995: $900 - $75 (gift certificate) - $45 (instant rebate) - $100 (MSN Rebate) - $100 (Nikon Rebate for 995) = $580

Coolpix 5000: $1100 - $100 (gift certificate) - $55 (instant rebate) - $100 (MSN Rebate) = $845

I think any digital camera will be able to do all that, except for maybe enlargements which will benefit from one that has more pixels (3-5MP). I own the G2 and it's a great camera. There are enough controls to satisfy those who are more experienced and at the same time is easy (everything is relative) for novices.

Once you've compared the reviews/ ratings on the different cameras, it'll come down to what your satisfaction level is with respects to quality, price and styling. I'm sure the 995 takes very good pictures but I'm not fond of the styling. I prefer the smaller, more compact style of the G2. Like a lot of others, I'm waiting to see how the Nikon 5000 performs. The 5000 styling is more like the G2's. But it's also more expensive.

The 995 is the big brother (or is it sister) to the 990, which I have. I love it and print huge enlargements all the time. Would I like 5 megapixels? You bet. Would I trade my 990 for the one of the early 5000's? Nope.

Like new software, it's best to let someone else find the bugs. You'll be very happy with the 990 if the ergonomics suit you. Go to a store and handle one.

Here is what I just advised my relative:
  • Low cost, compact: Fuji 2600
  • Medium cost, bulky but most fun and versatile: Olympus C2100-uz
  • Medium cost, ultra compact: Canon S30
Every one of them has best value and image quality in its class and suits your needs very well.

If you want to spend a lot more money, pick the Nikon 5000.

I suspect pretty much any of the 3+MPixel cameras will do what you want. I'd suggest watching sales, then reading the reviews here and a couple of other places to make sure you aren't looking at a dog - though there really don't seem to be many serious loosers out there.

I also have the Casio 3000 and my biggest gripe is the placement of the tripod socket on the corner of the camera. It is one example of a camera that can be found at a good price: don't start looking by restricting yourself to much. Spend the money you save on a good whack of memory (at least 128M, 256 is better).
