Hi,

I'm thinking about buying a D100 as a temporary camera until I can afford a D2X. They are not too much money now the D200 is out and it seems like a good camera (can't believe there is no pc socket though!!) and it could be a good back up when I get the D2X.

I know everybody's needs and situations are different but what do you think?

It's certainly going to be a step up from my Oly E20, and I've been using an F5 recently and so feel a bit spoiled.

Thanks for any opinions.

Julian

--I did pass on D100 when new and myself will pass today. I don't know how much they go for but I get D2H fo $965 4 months ago. I think at same price level you can get D70 and close to it D1X. 1/180 sec flash synch is limitation I can't live with .I use lot of fill in flash outdoor and 1/250 is min. and D70 1/500 is extrimly usefull.

Well, over here (UK) the D2Hs is still over £2000!!!! And it's only 4MP!!!

Not too sure about the D70 (or D70s). I wanted something a little closer to the D2X and F5.

I might be talking rubbish here but the D70 seems a bit too 'consumer level'.

Julian

I would get a D100 - I recantly Got a D100 for next to nothing, and I love the camera. my brother and a friend of mine both have the D70s, but seems to "consumer" type to me, ,like you mentioned. The D100 is an amazing camera, yes it might be 4 years old now, but still takes amazing pictures.

I would still go for a D100 over the D70/70s anytime, feels more like a "pro" body than the D70s

The setup of the D100 is very nice, but yeah.
GO for D100, even a second hand one would be good.

Hope you make the right decision for you.

Regards

First, I'll declare a conflict of interest; I have a D100 and have no intentions of "upgrading" to a D200.

Second, you really won't go wrong with either decision but look at the typical D70 pics in the D50/D70 section and compare them to the D100 pics in this forum. Particularly look at:

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?.forum=1021&message=17866423

There is a slight bias in favor of the D100 doing this simply because the people using the D100 here tend to be better photographers; the member who submitted the portrait I refer to above would make beautiful piictures with a Brownie Hawkey.

Having said all this, I do lust after the i-TTL lighting system of the D70, particularly sine I bought 2 SB600's planning to use them as slaves--another story. However, the D-TTL system from the D100 with an SB600 isn't too shoddy once you get used to it.

Then you won't want the D100 - just as consumer as the D70. Find a used D2H. Out performs the D100 across the board - pixel level sharpness, color, tonality, AF speed, AF accuracy, build quality, feature set, etc. It shares basically the same body as the D2X so it's a better back up to switch between. 4 MP is just as good as the 6 MP D100 - I've owned both.

Go D70s or D200. I say get the D70s. Yes it does not have the pro body like either my D200 or D2x but the D70s is a much nicer camera then the D100, which I also had one of. I still own a D70 that my wife uses. Lots of difference between them. The D70 and D70s are much faster in focus and in stutter lag. Just a thought, why not get the D200 and then U have a nick back up camera when you get your D2X.

No I wouldn't buy a D100. The D70-D70s is a much more capable camera and the images are better straight out of the box. That is unless you prefer to have everything less saturated. The D100 produces great images but requires a bit of post to get them where you want them.

The D70s is a much better buy and it the price they're going for, worth considering. Having previously owned the D100, post processing can be quite time consuming. The D70s is a much better camera (image wise), forget about the 'taboo' of being seen as unprofessional with using a 'consumer camera'.

If you are planning to get a D2X, the D70s as a back-up camera would be a nice compliment.

Come on give everyone a break here, with this consumer quality nonesense. yes, D200 and d2x are the it camera and holding a D100 got me really interested in digital and I almost bought one "but" the D70 is ahead of the D100 in pict quality is not exactly a throw away camera. the D70 is very much in line with a light commercial camera and still has some of the highest ratings any camera , plus it gave Nikon(and us) that big push into the digital world. A great camera for the masses so to speak. the d70 is worthy if you don't really need to change to higher iso, yes it has a mag body(the D70 isn't going to fall apart), D100 has bigger viewfinder(but not as much info). I want something a little closer to the D2x but can't afford it one says--gheez isn't that the way it is. Get on the train and bring your plastic or look at D100/D70 they are worthy camera and putting out some great picts. when the time is right I'll probably buy the D2x or D200 but to throw away the D70 as a instamatic is foolish and elitist. great camera it is. In finality--'the D70/70s is a quailty product which will last for years and work as primary and as a great back-up. give it consideration, at least as much as you would others. consumer quality only--baloney-------ron s.
  • just as consumer as the D70. >

There are certain features that the D100 has that the D70/s lacks and vice versa.

Simply stated the D100 has a slightly larger viewfinder and mirror pre-release. Additionally it has a more robust build, and the optional MB-D100, plus more traditional cable release options. I believe also that the additional memory banks for settings are only on the D100.

The D70/s has a significantly improved flash system, i-TTL and 1/500 sync speed are pretty cool. The D70/s is marginally lighter, and likely does produce photos which require a bit less post processing.

If you understand these differences and how they would likely apply to your type of shooting then you should be able to make the decision on your own. If you don't, then the D70/s is probably a better choice, because that camera is designed for shooters with less experience and the need for more assistance from the camera.

"And it's only 4MP"...

Best d@mn 4mp pictures you'll ever see! (although I agree £2000 is steep)

I believe the poster said find a D2h, however. I traded my D100 for a D2h over a year ago and, unless you want high iso (which in any case NN fixes pretty well) the D2h will render just as much detail and is much more responsive. What's the pont in having more pixels if you miss the shot or it's OOF?

Its not the MegaPixels your paying for with a D2Hs its the professional build and the speed your paying for.

D2Hs vs D70s

Nikon Multi-CAM2000 vs Nikon Multi-CAM900
8 fps up to 50 JPEG vs 3 fps, up to 12 JPEG images
Built in Vertical Grip vs non except third party

Nice speech but it doesn't change the facts. Nor is it on point - since I wasn't commenting on the D70 build quality - just COMPARING it to another camera to give the OP a fair understanding of what he would get.

The OP said he wants something closer to the D2X and F5 - the D100 is NOT that camera - nor is the D70. Have you used the "D2" style body? If someone wants that body they will not be satisfied with a D100/D70.
