I notice Jessops now has the 30D and since I am looking at options following the KM meltdown, I am considering this as well as the D200 as the Nikon flash system is an attraction.

I just want to know whether the 70-200 f4 is optically as good as the f2.8.

Also what lens lineup would you advise for a new Canon system? I am just a general shooter not wanting the highest end but looking what some quality.

I think a fast 70-200 is an absolute. A fast sort of 2x to 70ish, Ultra wide..maybe a prime.

Any advice?

Thanks

Optically they are the same. Both are great.

10D
Sigma 20mm 1.8
EF 28-105mm f/4.0-5.6 USM
EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM

I wish I had the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM and a 1.4x teleconvertor

For portraits, I will soon buy the EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM

That's just my 2 cents

F4 is fine until you need F2.8. If you can't stretch to the Canon L then the Sigma is very good value for money.

I have the Canon 70 -200 f2.8 L IS, and if I'd been tight on budget, I'd probably gone with the Sigma f2.8 rather than the Canon f4

Based on the data out of the interferometer at Photodo, the F/4 is better than the F/2.8 which is better than the F/2.8 IS.

for a 20D/30D:

10-22, 24-70, 70-200 {any of the 3}
or
10-22, 24-105, 100-400

I get virtually 100% good shots from my f4. Fantastic lens and so much lighter than the f2.8 and great with a 1.4x extender.

The only thing I find is that it is sometimes a bit slow. I wish it had IS but if it did who would buy the f2.8? I am thinking of trying alternatives - I gather the 70-300 IS is very good. (except the portrait problem)
