Studio Work and the D1x

Mike,

I use mine all the time for editorial sports and fashion. Just did some great stuff with Angelie Almendare, a test for Hot Rod magazine and shots for her site (you can see them at http://www.angelie.com ). Will be shooting some swimwear at the beach soon, and have shot various other things in studio and out, with and without strobes, both Dynalight studio lights and Lumedynes on location, even using tungsten fresnels in studio. I like it so much that since I started using it in late August, I've shot about 3 rolls of film. It's replaced my film Nikons and Hasselblads for almost everything I do now. Teh workflow and quality is amazing if you really learn how to use it right.

Wow,

I had no idea I'd get so many hits. And to my site, which has a lot of images, little from digital. Here are two links to shots of lovely Angelie:

* http://www.tdphoto.com/temp/DSC_0309.jpg*

Remove the asterisks for the links - to honor Phil's rules I wanted ot make sure they won't show the real photos. Angelie must be seeing a bunch of traffic too. These were from a greenscreen test for a shoot for a pinup issue of Hot Rod magazine still in negotiation. Photos on Angelie's site are even sexier. But this is some small samples of what I've done in studio with the D1x.

Hope this helps! ;-)

You should negotiate a large order with the coalition military forces in Afghanistan.

Think about what would happen if 20 million of these shots were dropped on the Islamic Fundamentalist forces still holding out in the mountains? Two things, they'd either drop dead from shock or quit being Islamic Fundamentalist and the conflict would be over without firing a shot.

Very good Andre. Besides, it is quite refreshing to see beautiful ladies
instead of the usual pros and cons of so or so camera.
Muy bueno. Felicidades.

Are there many of you out there that use the D1x for studio work,
portraits and fashion etc?

What are the results like? does the D1x work well with strobes?

All of my work is now on the Nikon D1x having upgraded from a Fuji S1.
Quite a bit of my site was using a D1x.

The D1x is just a peach in the studio.

What with Capture2 remote if one wants DL and save - ideal for my artwork shoots - no CF memory problems and long and frequent download delays plus all the other beautiful stuff from C2.

But - even in Jpeg (normal) I am printing some absolutely beautiful stuff - one really has to see to believe. The detail and the sharpness that can be achieved is impressive – especially if one came to the Nikon through other digicams – me for instance from the CP990 (which printed great) and the E10 which has beautiful colours but did not like to be manipulated so I always felt I was not reaching their peak – the D1x files have just so much meat on them it is nearly impossible to degrade or destroy them – almost no matter what one does to them.

I've noticed a rather annoying YELLOW color cast with my studio strobes.

I've only used my D1x once in the studio and found it to be quite annoying, though pretty fixable.

Has anyone else had this problem? I just have a gut feeling that the camera is adjusting the color balance based on the "existing" light (modeling lights) and therefore it's too yellow. Am I off-base here?

Otherwise, I adore the camera and have made some really nice photos in the couple of months I've had it.

John,

How are you setting the White Balance? If you leave it on Auto, it will likely balance off the modleing lights and should actually render everything as very blue/cool. If you have it set for shade it would be very warm. I find that the flash WB seeting on mine is pretty good, and do sometimes set a custom one using a gray card, which works well. You can also dial in a little warmer or cooler than the presets or the custom by using the WB button and the front dial (by your index finger).

A color shift to some degree is certainly possible with your strobes, and the degre to which this happens woould vary with your particular strobes and even the degree of yellowing that might exist in the fabric of ageing softboxes.

On my first experience with the D1x and my Speedotrons, I found the results just a tad too warm. But this is why there is a way to make custom WB settings! Since a written description is not the ideal way to convey the degree to which your shots went yellow, it's hard to judge whether or not your experience is within normal parameters (as compared to your equipment and how it is being used). But if it was indeed easily fixable, I'd think you just need to make some custom WB settings for your particular strobe equiment.

I was afraid that a custom WB would be the answer. I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and read the manual again and try and figure out how to do it.

Thanks for the suggestion.
