I'm looking for a compact 3 MP camera and currently choosing between DSC-P5 and Canon S30. I personally prefer Sony - it's slightly more compact (key factor for me), but kinda concerned with Memory stick prices vs. CompactFlash, and Canon seems to have more features.
Could someone share his experiense with Sony?
Thanx in advance.

MVA,

I LOVE mine and would definitely suggest it. Not sure what the Cannon S30 is like but if you're looking for lightweight and small profile, the P5 is sweet. I can keep it in my pocket for the most part and not have it look really weird - thus I'll bring it around a lot more.

The P5 has 3x/6x zoom so not sure if that's important - I like that feature. Plus the battary on the P5 vs P1 is a lot better.

Finally, when I was at Circuit City I thought I saw a name-brand CompactFlash (or maybe it was SmartMedia) that for a 32MB was the same price at the Memory stick. I purchased one 32 MB card and so far (2 weekends of using it) I don't think I'll need another for awhile.

Check out the other thread on P5 as well...

I've had mine a week and love it. The pictures are sharp and the movie mode is fun too. Took a movie of my 4 year old boy and his best friend on a tire swing and the look on his face when he watches it is worth the $600 I spent.

I bought the 128MB memory stick too. The stick prices will continue to drop and the 256 and 512MB sticks are due out next year.

The two cameras are very similar.

The Canon does have aperture and shutter priority but I didn't care about that for my first digicam point and shoot.

Best Regards,
Owen

????? the battery in the P5 is a lot smaller the the one in the P1. it has about 40% less power. How does that make it better than the P1 batt?

...or are you saying the P1 vs. P5 , the P1 has a better battery?

By better, he may have meant that the P5 battery gives you as much run time in a smaller less powerful package. What this really means is that the P5 is more efficient than the P1.

Hi Owen,

I am looking at buying either the Sony DSC_P5 or Canon S30 and have been reading people's opinions and advices. You mentioned the Canon has aperture and shutter priority - what are they for? Under what circumstances would you need them?

Thanks
