1 GB CF Card $29!!!!

I find 1GB cards too stingy in capacity; I wind up shuffling too many cards when I'm in the middle of a day's shooting or even a single gig. Many of my cards are 2GB, and last week I bought a four 4GB Sandisk Extreme III on sale.

Be VERY careful with 'no name' variety. Read a related post of mine, where I could not get any pictures off the card. ScanDisk should be OK but avoid the VGi Valgear memory max. Never again for me!

Before I purchase a new card I research the company and the model I am looking at. I am weary of ANYTHING that sells for extremely cheap, especially when it comes to photographic storage.

Would I buy generic film for your camera? MAYBE, in a pinch, if there was NOTHING else available. Would I buy generic memory? Again, MAYBE in a pinch. Sandisk isn't exactly generic, but their 'economy' line of cards isn't much, if any, better than the generics.

These cheap cards may be a boon for the budget-minded, but lose or miss even a single, important, client photo due to corruption or lack of speed and you could very well lose thousands potential revenue.

Just my 2 cents.

Last week, Circuit City had Hitachi 4 GB microdrives for $70 after rebates (initial cost was $150). I was skeptical, but since this was such a good deal, and a professional photographer swears by them (they are all he uses - no CF cards) I decided to try one.

I have used it at a two events. One was a play my cousin was in the cast and I decided to photograph. I shot over 250 shots. No problems. Sure was nice not shuffling cards in and out - usually at the most inopportune moment (lol).

Its a lot of eggs in one basket, but it sure seemed like a good value for the money. It does seem slower than the Ultra II cards I have. It will be interesting to see come football season, if I run out of buffer in the camera because of the somewhat slower speed of the MD card.

B&H had 4GB Sandisk Extreme III Compact Flash cards on sale for $197.95 each. I thought that was a great deal. But they are now out of stock. To see this, go to B&H and search on "psmar." You'll see all of the products on sale in March.

Seagate 8 GB CF (3200 RPM) for $150.
Yep, they're great and fast with the 20D.

I get a little worried with that many pictures on one drive, but it's probably more risky to be constantly changing cards. Never had one lost picture in over 2 years using the Hitachi 4GB drive. Between the two, I now have 12GB storage... more than enough for even the most incredible day of shooting.

I had a lot of problems with that Seagate 8 GB drive on my recent trip to Central America. After about 200 photos (RAW with a Canon 10D) the camera sporadically couldn't read or write to the drive. Reseating either the card or battery sometimes cleared the problem, but it was hit or miss from that point forward.

I have a problem open with Seagate at the moment. So far the response has been "that shouldn't happen."

Also keep in mind the write times to that drive are extremely slow. I frequently filled the camera buffer and had to wait for additional shots. Battery life is also reduced by almost 2/3.

They're cheaper for a reason.

However it may have been acting up in Central America because of the conditions, the Seagate cards are made for consumer use (family photos, MP3 players, not extreme temperatures and climates with lots of moisture). You may have been better off with a flash card at that point.

As for the speed, they are about 30-40x speed, so not exactly stellar, but better than any generic card or unlabeled card. Sorry you had bad luck with your's!

Doesn's anyone remember when we used to have to change film every 36 shots? We act like if we have to change cards every 100 shots, it's the end of the world. I'm still using my 256mb cards as well as my 1gb cards. It's a pain, but not that big a deal. I still can't see putting all your eggs in a 4gb microbasket......

I've been dealing with both Canon and Seagate and here are the results.

1. Canon won't touch it. They claim that the 10D will support up to 2048GB (not that there's any storage out that size) but they have never tested the 10D with any more than 1 GB. So the camera will allegedly work with more than 1 GB but they won't guarantee it or support it. (I have the e-mail that states that for anyone like me that finds it hard to believe.)

2. Seagate claims that this is a known bug with the 3.01 firmware level of the drive. I've been told to return the drives to them and they will replace them with the 3.02 firmware level which supposedly corrects this specific problem.

We shall see. The drives are being packed and shipped as I type.

Have you read some member reported Buy.com is now offering Sandisk 4Gb Ultra II for $109 with FREE S/H?

I think this is a killer deal, and it may last very long.
