Well the unthinkable happened. I left my office this morning with my wife and child and asked my wife to take the camera with her to the car. We all got in and I proceeded to back up...but went over a slight bump...it wasn't a bump. It's still functioning, but I can't get over the feeling that her days may be numbered! My wife has no idea how the camera ended up under the car. I am at a loss of words...

Holy S!@#t! I can't believe you did that! What I can't believe even more is how well the camera held up under all that weight! Dang!
You should be glad that it is even still working!
Geeeeezsus!
My sympathy goe out to you and the camera for sure! That was a quick $1000.

I'm actually still paying on it! The car ride home was the longest one ever. I'm still in shock about the whole thing. Can't think straight...must go take pictures...

So far so good, but I still have this unsettling emptiness in my stomach. I see no problems with my pictures, but it's still too early to tell. Not sure if I should send it BACK in for sony to look at...should I? What could they do if I see no problems with my pictures?

Yeah, your right about the weight of a car going over this thing! It should have been crushed!! Well, at least I know this is one TOUGH camera!!!!!!!!!

Oh My:

How sad you must be...I immediately ran to make sure my angel was safe in her case...Whew !!

If your Angel " expires" I'm sure that STFers would want to help in any way we can....perhaps as Pallbearers !

Sorry, couldn't resist...besides, at this time you have to have some distraction from you grieving
Insurance an option ?
Take care

Hi oemag,

I have been though so many tests with F707 but never thought of this test (F707 toughness) !!! Heeheeheehee...:)))) Are you sure that you did spend sometime with your wife since you brought it home?!...or did you look around and make sure that Brian Sylvery was not there?!! :))) LOL!

That's all oemag, that's all that I can think of! I'm glad that the Dark Angel already pasted the hardest test! :)))

oemag,

Find consolation in the fact that the camera was not on your shoulder...

Oh wow! That would be my worst nightmare.

Here's what I'd do. Take it to Sony and tell them they can have it back....if they give you a new one and call it even. After all this camera is a great advetisment.

To get the manual focusing ring back to normal, put the camera in the drive way 90 degrees from the position of the initial flattening an run over it again.

Do not let Mrs. Oemag suffer unnecessary guilt. This appears to be a prime opportunity for a bit of the kiss and makeup thing. Take her out for dinner.

Personally, I would have finished off the job that the wife couldn't finish, and used the camera on her head......
And I wouldn't have been taking a photo of it either...

Only Jestin......
What a MAJOR pity, sorry buddy.

Ouch. That really sucks. This is definately more tragic than when I was 6 and my dad ran over my favorite He-Man guy. Definately more tragic.

On a serious note... It appears from the photos that the camera was laying "flat" when it was run over. Most of the compression weight appears to have been downward, with the weight of the car rolling off the curve of the body. Also the shot which shows the splitting of the case structure by the screw on the under side of the lense tube, affirming this theory. If I were you... I would put the lense body in a vice with the sides of the vice on the two sides of the tube, as opposed to the top and bottom... and very gently tighten it to compress the sides back into roughly the original shape. I imagine with just the right amount of tension to reform the metal, your focus ring would work more smoothly.

I would also consider the suggestion that has been put forth to contact Sony and say "listen, my wife ran over my 707, and save for the manual focus ring being a little rough, it works just like it did out of the box..." and attempt to "sell" it back to them as an advertising gimmick, or something they can show off at trade shows. It may just work. There is a hunting company called Orvis. They have been making hunting gear for well over a hundred years. They found this old timer up in the mountain who had been using the same orvis hunting vest and gear for 80 -years-, and it was still working fine. They bought the gear from him in exchange for thousands of dollars of new equipment from their catalog. Its now in the company musuem =) Worth a shot to contact Sony!

Btw, I hope you're not too upset with your wife. Its easy to get angry and upset, but remember... that camera doesn't keep the bed warm at night or make you breakfast grin

Maybe your wife is trying to tell you something?

Another thought... Any G2 or D7 owners out there that want to try a similar test?
