After upgrading to D200, the Sigma 12-24 I got doesnt focus when using the AF-On button.

I understand Sigma has a fix for this and requires me to send over the lens to be re-chipped.
Can anyone share his/her experience with this repair?
What is the turn around time?

Did anyone get the lens back in a worse condition (any damage/problems that were not there before)?
Are there any issues with other camera bodies after the repair?

Since I didn't get any replies in the Nikon Lens forum, I hope I can get better responses in this forum.

Thanks,
Chagai

... or some sort of service from Sigma to make them compatible with D200. Give Sigma a call and they will guide you in the process. The good thing is that this will not cost you a dime and Sigma will do it free for you.

Speed is significant and interesting but accuracy is downright fascinating

I have the same lens- realy like it. I don't really use the AF-On button so I haven't bothered sending it to Sigma, but would like to hear what you find out. I am DROOLING over the Nikon 10.5mm Fisheye by the way- tred on e in a camera shop in Philly, but happy with the 12-24 for now.

Call sigma at 800.896.6858 to confirm that they have a firmware update ready to install.

The first issue applies to all HSM (Sigma's equivalent of AF-S) equipped lenses, plus the 80-400mm OS lens. The second issue is more vague, referring to exposure problems.

I have two HSM lenses. Sigma told me to simply mail them to the New York service centre, no RMA number is needed. Of course, document why you are sending the lenses, inventory exactly what you are sending (e.g. lens caps, filters, tripod mount, etc.), and place copies of both in the box with the lens.

Thankfully I only got the 12-24 from Sigma so only affected by the AF-On issue.
I called Sigma and was told the turn around time is about 3 weeks.

I'm less concerned with how long it takes (although I really like this lens and using it a lot). However, I'm a big believer in "if it's not broken don't fix it" and since the lens works perfectly with the only glitch being the AF-On button, I would like to hear if anyone had experience with this repair and if there are any issues using this lens with other bodies after the repair.

I have got a sigma 18-70 f2,8-4 and a 70-300 f4-5,6 and none of them focus well (using the autofocus) they focus some distance before the selected point...imposible to use the autofocus.

and when they make it clear that they have, i plan to buy their 10-20mm. But like you I also don't use the AF-On button - at this time.

I have the Sigma 70-300 APO II and it focuses perfectly on the D200.

I might imagine things, but it actually seems like it focuses faster on the D200 than it does on the D70.

I had a similar issue with the 70-200 HSM when I bought the then new D100. As I recall, it took about 2 1/2 weeks for the round trip to NY for re-chipping. I treat my glass with TLC and the idea of sending it off for work was a little disconcerting. The lens was in perfect condition when it left, and it came back from Sigma the same way.

I sent my 50-500mm and 10-20mm to Sigma for the firmware upgrade on 3/1. I got them back on 3/15. No problems other than some smudges on the filter, which cleaning with a microfiber cloth took care of. They now work with the "AF-ON" button on my D200. Excellent service!

Seems like every time a new body comes out, Sigma lenses need to be rechipped. Guess that's what you get from reverse-engineering. At least Sigma is good at providing upgrades.

I ordered this lens and a couple of days ago, I finally got it.

However, I had to wait almost a month, because the dealer made sure with Sigma that the lens I get is 100% D200 compatible.
It is.

I must commend Sigma (having used their lenses for over a decade now) that the quality of service just gets better and better.
I wish Nikon would take an example. Somehow, I don't expect Canon to.

I sent my Sigma 12-24 HSM for the D200 upgrade and what can I say...
Sigma service is unbelievable, many companies should learn from them!

I sent the lens on Monday last week, it was delivered to Sigma on Thursday, repaired on Friday, shipped back on Monday and I got it today Wednesday.
9 days turn around time for repair including shipping... Amazing service!
And the lens was cleaned as well.

Works perfectly now.

good to hear you got it back and its doing fine.

i have the same lens and mine is also metering differently from my other lenses.

i have the nikon 18-70mm and the manual focus nikkor 24mm f2.8 and if i put all the lenses at 24mm, the nikkors meter the same, but the sigma i have to continually add 2/3ds of a stop. did you have this as well or was it only the focus issue?

perhaps the rechipping might also take care of my exposure problem?

im gonna have to send it in one of these days anyway, so i guess i'll find out soon enough, but was wondering if you had experienced the same..

I live in Europe. My turnaround time is probably no good to you... but sending it to Sigma is actually allright. It will come back just fine - no worries. They know they have a permanent problem with the frequent need to rechip lenses; therefore this service is quite good.

As for the AF-On. You need to know yourself whether or not you use that feature very often. I hardly ever do and I would not have sent in my lens (why bother), but my Sigma 150 purchased in February turned out to have no problem whatsoever on the D200.

I don't see that lens in this list, but Sigma is aware of an exposure problem with some of their lenses on the D200. (I guess thats the camera you have?) Anyway, refer to this link:

Thanks, I had forgotten about posting that. That is what made me wonder initially, and I was surprised to find the 12-24 wasnt on it. Thats why I started wondering if others had the same experience as me?

(You were right to assume I have the D200).

Thanks - but the way I read it, that seems to talk only about the AF button problem. Anyway I will send it in, and I guess I will find out. But I 'm still curious if other users have found any metering problem with their 12-24 and the D200.
