If I try to delete images on an SD card in a USB card reader connected to my PC, I get an error saying that the card is protected. But the card doesn't seem to be protected, and I have no problem deleting the images when the card is in the camera. Any ideas what might be going on here?

Thanks...

Nothing unusual. SD cards do behave like that in card readers. Just delete the images in the camera.

Thats news to me. I use a PCMCIA card reader and have no problems deleting files from SD cards. Is that a limitation of USB readers? Do all USB readers have this limitation?

Can you copy files from your computer onto the SD card using the USB adaptor?

Are the files you are trying to delete marked read only?

What operating system are your using (Windows XP/Mac/Linux)?

i don't know why it happens but i know it's happened to me before and leanf is right: i was able to delete the pics in my camera and then everything was fine....

I'm not suggesting it can't happen, I'm challenging the implication that it's normal with SD cards in a card reader. It's not normal, but it's a moot point - conventional wisdom suggests you should let the camera do all the important card operations like deletion and formatting rather than doing them on a PC.

It might be something as simple as the switch getting moved as you put it in the card reader. Had exactly that problem with a SD card in a Pocket PC.

Try a little Sellotape (Scotch tape) over the switch and see what happens.

...'formatting' clears the card completely and 'deleting' can leave bits behind and that will slow down your card. And 'formatting' is best done in the camera. good luck!
