coming from 35mm point and shoot (read: I'm not a real 'photographer') I was leaning toward a Canon S40. For the $$ the 707 just seems like such a better value.

I just don't know how much the extra size would really bother me as I trudge through Sea-World with my two kids, a digital camera, a 35mm point and shoot, and a camcorder, not to mention back packs with sippie cups and diapers....

I know this is a prefernce thing, but would appriciate any coments people have. I know the G2 might be an intermediate step (size wise, arguable camera wise), but I believe I like the 707 enough better to say either portable S40, or bulk 707.

bottom line, I like the 707 on paper, but am worried about size and weight.

Thanks.

I think i got the answer.....Take Stroller to Park. Make the Family walk and put all the camera stuff in the Stroller ! Great....

On the serious side, I think you will learn to love the "Dark Angel"...most hi-quality pro or semi-pro cameras are "substantial"
You remember to take pitchas now !

Well, try leaving the point and shoot behind, you won't need it if you're carrying the 707. Unless you're real picky, you might even be able to leave the camcorder behind too.

well, the kids are heavier than the gear, I guess a third stroller (only two kids).....

Could I really leave the point in shoot behind.... I didn't know that was a real option, although I had hoped it might be. What type of printer is required to make this realistic?

Of course camcorder doesn't always go, but a worst case scenario illustrated the point....

Thanks for your comments. I'm wired on this, can't sleep, only think about camera....

I think that's a very intelligent choice — if you're after the best performance/compactness combination the S40 would be almost impossible to beat and would often be truly pocketable depending what you're wearing.

With reference to the F707, all I can do for you is compare its weight (667 g) to my Olympus OM2n — top quality 35mm SLR from the early/mid eighties; smaller outline than most but solidly built. 1055 grams with a 35–70 mm zoom on it, which was somewhat lighter than a typical Nikon of the day. Remember that everyone was lugging cameras built like this around not so long ago without thinking twice about it. I doubt that you'll notice the weight of the F707 at all. There's that long lens barrel, but when it's hanging down (carried normally on a shoulder strap), the whole thing will protrude less from your body than a typical 35mm SLR.

Take 2 aspirins and go to bed...you're getting 707 Fever ! HEhehee..love it ! We've all been through this.....

The 707 is a serious "Point and Shoot" Digica in addition to being fully Manual, if you choose....on AUTO it is fierce, so you could very well leave your other Digicam at home.

Not to cloud the issue further, but the 707 takes good MPEG Movie clips with sound, limited only by the storage capacity of your Memory Stiacks... not a substitute for a Camcorder but adds flexibity in a pinch.

Now that you're "Sleepless in Seattle" ( or wherever ) Click on this link to see your new Case for the 707....you can wear it on your shoulder or on your BELT...one less thing to carry !!! I love mine.......

This is definitely the future of things. Commercial printing is at least as streamlined these days as chemical printing, and you should be looking to retire the film P&S (see below). As to printers, well you should be looking at a decent one sooner or later in any case. Epson is definitely the favoured marque, and the best way to learn about what's performing how well is to sniff around the Printers and Printing forum. (My own Epson 900 is a bit dated for me to advise you directly.)

There are now small dedicated postcard-size photo printers, but the good ones aren't cheap — in fact they're a specialized device and as such are more expensive than a good general-purpose photo-quality inkjet.

For routine happy snaps to stick in albums (and to get you started while you're thinking about your own printer) you should also consider on-line storage/printing services. The camera allows you to tag specific frames for the bureau to print, so you won't need to physically isolate the images you want printed from a set. Storing your images on-line also has the advantage that family members and friends can order prints themselves from your galleries, saving effort on your part not to mention difficulties over who pays for them.

ADDENDUM: I use an Epson 870....discontinued but replaced by 875 which takes Ms directly (with Adaptor)...ie. no computer needed to produce prints...if this is a plus for you !

Hi Rufus,

You really should envision how you are going to use your camera. To answer you original question, definitely S40 or G2 is your best choice. They are small enough to carry in a large pocket yet have all the manual functions to play with.

For myself, 707 is such a beauty that I had many sleepless nights waiting to get mine. Now I have mine and I love it. I evolved from 35mm SLR to comapct Point & Shoot cameras for their compactness and light weight to Canon G1, again compact and light weight. However, digital photography has matured to such an extent that I am evolving to go back to heavier and bulkier equipment like 707 for some serious shooting again.

If you decide on buying S40 or G2, Canon's Zoom Browser software is one of the easiest to use and you will be able to organize your photos in no time.

If you decide to buy 707, you should consider buying ACDSee software to organize and view your photos.

The best photo printer for a low price currently is Epson 780, about US$100. However, the cost of ink and photo paper per 8x10 print is about $1.50 to $2.00. It is usually cheaper to get your photos printed by on-line photo companies. The quality from on-line photo companies is usually so good that even under microscope you cannot differentiate it from a film print.

You will also need a CD burner to archive your photos on CD's just in case your hard drive crashes or your computer is stolen.

Most people who have use digital cameras for a while have abandon their film cameras. In fact, many people do not even both making prints of their photos. Go digital and enjoy.

Good points Jade, but I have found that having a digicam has eliminated the need (at least for me) for a camcorder and a point and shoot 35 mm.

I absolutely love the speed, control and simplicity AND especially the superior quality of the final product!!!

Rufus, I think you may find the same (lack of need for the other hardware).

I have an Epson 875 and it runs me about $1 plus for an 8x10. Costco has Epson gloss photo paper for $10 for 100 sheets. Works for all be the finest shots... Ink is the cost driver.

Ditto the CD burner.

Have fun,
Ron

Thanks for all the comments... nice to fall asleep, then wake up thinking about this, then find replies....

I'm going to go shopping / looking again today, I'm checking out printers also.

My wife doesn't get 'techno fever' at all, if she decides she likes this it will be through a slow, proven, migration.

I appriciate everyones sincere and well thought comments. I'm still scared I'll buy based on a cost / feature assesment, then not use it due to size... Maybe I'll buy from a place with a long return policy, and buy both, and return one; of course being upfront with the merchent on my plans (I guess I would have to use third party software so I don't open what comes with camera).

Thanks again all,
