You really have a problem excepting that they do not throw away malfunctioning cameras. Get over it.
Yes, I have worked on electronics and was an electronics technician (attended class a electronics school along with advanced electronics in the service). I have worked as a repair technician among other things pertaining to electronics. It seems like YOU are the person that does not have a clue what you are talking about.
My first wife also build and repaired electronic equipment from kyocera (intricate electronic test equipment from the medical field) before the plant was moved out of the country. Yes, she soldered individual parts just as I did.
First off you are painting a picture of of some repair tech sitting in an office individually fixing all of the cameras. Nikon factory repair or refurbish means they were sent to the factory to be fixed and repackaged. Cameras that are sent in for warranty are done here by one of the repair facilities. Cameras that are factory refurbished are shipped to thailand, or wherever the factory is. Picture a smaller section of the factory that deals with returns. They have people that pull out malfunctioning parts and put working ones in that were fixed prior. They have people fixing all of the parts that were pulled out including circuit boards. It's ridiculous to think they would not solder new parts on a board when they have people there soldering parts on boards in the first place. What do you think little fairies come out and solder parts on boards? It's cheaper to have someone solder a new part on a board than have someone solder all the new parts on a new board. They pay people little to nothing to solder parts on boards in places like thailand, china and taiwan.
If it was cheaper to throw the camera away and just give a new one don't you think everyone would get a new camera if theirs was sent in under warranty? Why do you think they fix them? It's cheaper to have them fixed in the us than give a new one built in thailand, so why would you think they would throw away new returns.
Haha, now you are getting to percentages of getting a fixed one. Originally you were up in arms about them fixing and returning cameras at all so at least it seems you are trying you think a little (very little). I don't give a damn about percentages and that was never the point. The point is that they fix and return cameras, they don't throw them away as you have ignorantly insinuated. I believe the chance of getting a repaired one greater, but I'm not going to argue that because I don't care. I do know they fix and resell malfunctioning cameras (don't throw them away) and some places DO sell open boxes instead of returning them to the factory. Just accept that.
"They fix the damn thing and resell it. You need to start waking up
in the same world everyone else does."
Have you ever tried to unsolder a surface mount component ? Have
you ever fixed something intricate like a camera ?
And did you follow my logic ? The return rate from fickle
consumers is probably 10x the return rate from defective product.
Assuming they fix 100% of the defective D50s, you'd have a 10%
chance of getting a fixed camera.
