Refurbished D50's on eBay

Refurbish usually means replacing the hosing also (if it has been used), just like with printers, etc. When they factory refurbish something you will never tell it's been used. If you ask everyone they will never get a factory refurbished that looks used. Why? Not because they throw those camera's away, but because they replace the housing and reuse the insides.

OK... What do you think the failure rate of the D50 is ? Huh ? How many have you heard failing ? I've heard of exactly ZERO, but I don't get out much.

Now... How many people do you think you to Costco, etc. and find out they have a 30 day no questions asked return period and take a D50 home and play with it a bit and then decide they don't want it or find a better deal somewhere else ? I've read about several such incidents right on this board.

Now... lets say a D50 failed. What exactly would go wrong with it ? LCD quits ? Maybe ? Shutterbox fails ? Maybe. Imager is bad ? How many of these is Nikon going to actually spend any time fixing ? Very few. By the the problem is troubleshot and they spend time replacing parts (whole boards), they will just throw them out because they won't be much further ahead.

So... what do you think actually gets refurbished ? THE RETURNED MODELS. I talked to a Costco guy myself and I personally asked him what the return policy was. And he told me and he told me that they go straight back to Nikon . Get it ? I explained this to you once before, but you have an inside theory that that doesn't really happen.

Whatever. I bought a refurbished camera. Actually two of them now. Maybe someone drove over mine with a car, but Nikon fixed it and it works as good as new. Are you happy now ?

Haha, what a whacko, You actually think Nikon throws away brand new cameras because something malfunctions on it? They fix the damn thing and resell it. You need to start waking up in the same world everyone else does.

Funny how you get your diaper in a bunch trying to convince yourself that no new malfunctioning camera gets refurbished and resold. What a riot. Get a clue boy, get a clue.

I don't care if you gave a costco guy a bj, it still does not change the fact that cameras that that malfunction get refurbished and sold.

I don't give a damn what happened to your camers, but you sure are upset over the though of repaired ones being resold. I have repeated myself several thimes that they fix the damn cameras before they sell them so why don't you stop crying?

Why would they be taking them apart? They are all open box cameras that nobody touched, LMFAO.

Nikon Manufactured Refurbished-Savvy buyers know that manufacturer refurbished products can be a great value. These items are usually priced 10 to 15 percent lower than a comparable new product. When you buy a manufacturer refurbished product, you can be assured you're getting the quality you have come to expect from the manufacturer. When products are returned to a manufacturer from retailers or customers, manufacturer-trained technicians take them apart and rebuild them to original factory specifications. The technicians then retest to ensure that these products meet the same quality standards as required for brand-new manufacturer products.

"They fix the damn thing and resell it. You need to start waking up in the same world everyone else does."

Have you ever tried to unsolder a surface mount component ? Have you ever fixed something intricate like a camera ?

And did you follow my logic ? The return rate from fickle consumers is probably 10x the return rate from defective product. Assuming they fix 100% of the defective D50s, you'd have a 10% chance of getting a fixed camera.

BTW: Calling people names doesn't do anything for your argument and, infact, demonstrates your real moral character more than anything.

they're not really used, they are factory refurbished (reconditioned) they just can't sell them as new, but they are "like" new. That is different then store refurbished, always want it to say factory. Usually used products either have no warranty or just a 30 day store return with no options for extended warranties. I just think it misleads people (not trying to be rude, I swear, others have said it in this thread). Same thing applies to factory refurbished computers, if you can purchase an extended warranty, then its pretty much just a better deal for the buyer. Its cheaper the brand new and if its cheap enough you add the extended warranty and its maybe only $75-100 less, but you 5 years instead of 1.
400$ for a used camera or 500$ for a brand new one + a longer
warranty?

Seems like a bad deal IMHO.

You really have a problem excepting that they do not throw away malfunctioning cameras. Get over it.

Yes, I have worked on electronics and was an electronics technician (attended class a electronics school along with advanced electronics in the service). I have worked as a repair technician among other things pertaining to electronics. It seems like YOU are the person that does not have a clue what you are talking about.

My first wife also build and repaired electronic equipment from kyocera (intricate electronic test equipment from the medical field) before the plant was moved out of the country. Yes, she soldered individual parts just as I did.

First off you are painting a picture of of some repair tech sitting in an office individually fixing all of the cameras. Nikon factory repair or refurbish means they were sent to the factory to be fixed and repackaged. Cameras that are sent in for warranty are done here by one of the repair facilities. Cameras that are factory refurbished are shipped to thailand, or wherever the factory is. Picture a smaller section of the factory that deals with returns. They have people that pull out malfunctioning parts and put working ones in that were fixed prior. They have people fixing all of the parts that were pulled out including circuit boards. It's ridiculous to think they would not solder new parts on a board when they have people there soldering parts on boards in the first place. What do you think little fairies come out and solder parts on boards? It's cheaper to have someone solder a new part on a board than have someone solder all the new parts on a new board. They pay people little to nothing to solder parts on boards in places like thailand, china and taiwan.

If it was cheaper to throw the camera away and just give a new one don't you think everyone would get a new camera if theirs was sent in under warranty? Why do you think they fix them? It's cheaper to have them fixed in the us than give a new one built in thailand, so why would you think they would throw away new returns.

Haha, now you are getting to percentages of getting a fixed one. Originally you were up in arms about them fixing and returning cameras at all so at least it seems you are trying you think a little (very little). I don't give a damn about percentages and that was never the point. The point is that they fix and return cameras, they don't throw them away as you have ignorantly insinuated. I believe the chance of getting a repaired one greater, but I'm not going to argue that because I don't care. I do know they fix and resell malfunctioning cameras (don't throw them away) and some places DO sell open boxes instead of returning them to the factory. Just accept that.

Frank I have stated here that there is really nothing wrong with refurbished as they repair them at the Nikon factory. I have purchased refurbished stuff and not have a problem with it. It has been returned to manufacturers specifications.

Just understand (as this guy cannot grasp) that factory refurbished stuff includes malfunctioning (fixed) stuff and not all opened returned stuff that has not been touched. That's all. Nobody is saying the repaired stuff hasn't been repaired to new standards.

With all of the places selling factory refurbished stuff do you really think these are all people that opened the d50 package and decided they didn't like how it looked? That's ridiculous. Why is it that you don't see a flooding of d70s refurbished? I'm sure they are out there, but there's a lot of places selling refurbished d50's and I really don't think thousands of people are ordering it and returning it after looking at it.

YOU brought up about not seeing malfunctioning d50 cameras here so you don't believe they would have so many manfunctioning. Just how many have you seen here that people sent back after ordering and looking at it? What is that? None? The same argument could be used here.

Know what else makes up factory refurbished? A batch of cameras that came off the line and was shipped but had something wrong with them. They send the batch back to the factory, they are opened and repaired and then repackaged as refurbished. For example after the fact they find out from a supplier that they got a bad capacitor (example). Not to the point of where it would involve a recall, but found out in the shipping process. That happens. Then as I say they have to replace the capacitor in the cameras (repair them) and resell them as refurbished.

There are so many places selling refurbished d50's that I tend to think that could possdibly be the case here. I really don't see the masses returning the d50 (pretty much none here ) after buying and looking at it.
