How many photos can you take with a Sony DSC-V1?

I've had a DSC-V1 since the first month is came out.

Is it possible to just wear out a camera?

I took over 26,000 photos with it and it just pooped out on me last week.

Now I don't know what to do. I actually want to go out and buy a refurb DSC-V1 but I think I should upgrade at least to the V3 (but where do I find one?). I'm afraid to take the leap into a DSLR (probably a Nikon D50) ... but one of the things I loved about it my V1 was that I could tuck it in my bag or jacket pocket but it also really performed when I did my "studio" shots because of the manual controls.

I tried calling Sony to see if it could be fixed, but it'll cost $181 just to fix this problem and I also dinged the threads on the lens ring and can't use my telephoto. It just seems like I'm better off upgrading in some way, but there's nothing else like the V1 anymore, is there?

If you're curious, this is what the file error looks like, it's right here:

Anyone have any tips? Or at least sympathy for someone who just loved her V1 to death?

Excellent low light outside shot. I would hope a camera like the V1 can be liked as much. Good luck on your search.

You could go for a V3, it's even better than the V1, but keep in mind that it is a bit bigger (but you get better ergonomics in return).

Someone here on the forum just recently bought a V3, you should look it up.

Hi,

I love my V1 like you do. Since I've done "only" about 13k shots, it will last me another 2 years and a half, I presume!

This is what another poster said some weeks ago is called "semi-disposable stuff". A camera which you throw away after 3-5 years, when daddy's old film cam still works fine since decades...

It's so fun to be a consumer: buy and scrap, buy again an even cuter thing and scrap it later, and buy again and have fun. Just a good way to wear out world's material and energy resources at a fast pace. Our children's future and half of mankind's present are not worth taking care.... :-(

Anyway, the V1 is really a joy!

send Tim Driver an email and ask him for an estimate. give him the link to the sample picture.

I heard recently that he is extremely busy doing repairs right now, so be patient. He does excellent work at very fair prices.

You can decide what to do when you know what a repair will cost. Tim charges to repair your problem. Sony charges flat rates.

best of luck

but I thought I'd pass it along... it does apply to V1s

I think I'd go to the R1 if my V1 failed right now. My love is landscapes and seascapes and it seems the R1 excels in that area. Maybe I'd consider the new H2 or H5 as well for a longer lens situation... not sure...

For some reason, there never was a lot of excitement about the V3. maybe it wasn't enough of a difference between it and the V1... then the H1 came along...

Sony V1 - Still learning...

Whether you think that you can or that you can't, you are usually right.

Thanks for the troubleshooting help, Jerry. I emailed Tim and I'll be patient about a response.

I talked to Sony about the senor issue, but because I can actually frame shots using the LCD it indicates that it's a separate issue, probably a connection somewhere.

David - thanks for the pointer towards Amazon - I was looking there for a V3 (which they don't have) and now I'm poking around on eBay and craigslist.

French Dream - yeah I really don't like the idea of tossing aside the V1 without attempting to fix it, but the pure economics of putting so much money into something that may not be built for such a long life is troubling.

If I can't get a hold of a V3 anytime soon, I think I might go try out an R1 and see if that meets my general needs (I know it's not a pocket camera, maybe I should invest in bigger pockets) and hope that a V1 finds its way back into my life.

Thanks to everyone for your responses.

former DSC-V1 user, now searching for a new camera

I bought a DSC-V3 (used) and just got it on Friday. I managed to snag it for only $345 and it included a 1gig memory stick!

So far I'm loving it! It's just like my old camera, only newer and of course has some enhancements that address a couple of my frustrations with the old V1.

Thanks everyone!
