Sony UK called me today in response to my e-mail to them about 707 BFS.

They confirmed that a software upgrade is now available in the UK and advised me that I can either
  • Ask my retailer to deal with this on my behalf via Sony Technical, or
  • Contact Sony UK's Heathrow Service Centre (Tel. 0208 2832700) direct to arrange the fix.
Not sure of the arrangements for getting the camera to Sony yet (will they collect?) but this is the news I have been waiting to hear.

Yippee! and thank you Sony for contacting me - I'm getting excited about my 707 again!
Gary.

This is indeed good news.

I wonder if they also have the hardware upgrade if the software upgrade doesn't work as mentioned by our friends in the east.
Please keep us posted.

I supect that we might never know this without some "inside information".

My main concern though is a fix, whatever that entails, and I am confident that Sony UK are now fully on the case.

My retailer has been very helpful so far,and I'll call them in the morning for their advice on the best way forward with this.
I will keep you posted.

Great news Gary.
At least I know now that I can go and buy my F707, and if it is affected
Sony are "on the case".

I spoke to Sony at Heathrow today. I got quite a cool reception. It took sometime for them to admit they knew there was a problem. They said I could send them the camera but they could not guarrentee any return date or (and they were much keener on this) I could return it to my supplier and ask for a replacement. Reading between the lines I suspect they are stalling because they don't know as yet what they should be doing. Sending my camera back to Unbeatable is a non starter as far as I am concerned. If I did get a replacement I would be very surprised if it didn't also have BFS.

Having spent the best part of 1000 quid why can't Sony get themselves organised and own up to their responsibilities.

My hope is that it is really only a question of time. I have told Sony at Heathrow I will call again in 2 days time when I expect them to have more definitive information.

Gary.

Whats the e-mail address for Sony, as I am buying a 707 myself, but would rather wait for a "Working" camera, rather than go out tomorrow, get a camera , and have to send it away for a week, maybe two, while they fix it.

I want to get the dodgy serial numbers off them for the u.k., and then see if I can locate a fixed unit.

I contacted Sony via their feedback form on their web site.
Please see my post at
http://www.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1009&page=1&message=1736264
for the details.

Since Sony telephoned me to give me the Heathrow number to call, I'm disappointed to hear of Stewie's difficulty when he called them. There is clearly a communication problem within Sony.
I have a day off work tomorrow (whoopee) so I will call and see what happens.

I do think that we need to give Sony some time to get things together, however much we want a quick resolution of the problem. I'd much rather be confident that the fix is properly dealt with and effective than rushed due to pressure to achieve a quick turnaround.
I'll let you know how I get on.

Good news indeed, I'm still waiting for Dabs.com to get in touch they said they were going to swap out the camera, I'm reluctant to do this incase I get another dud so I'm going to ring the Heathrow center tomorrow seeing as I work round the corner.

Hi

I have been following this thread, just out of interest, I actually took my 707 into them yesterday. The guy who booked the unit in, was not aware of any problem, but I latter found out he worked in stores.
I am due to follow up mid next week.

A quick update.

Following the telephone call from Sony customer service in the UK I called their Heathrow service Centre on Friday.

The gentleman I spoke to said he "wasn't sure at the moment" whether a software fix was available. (Despite customer services having told me there is). He said they had received "no official notification" but that I could send my 707 in for repair, and they would deal with it when the fix is available.

He also said that it would be my responsibility to get the camera to them, that I should therefore pack it carefully and that they would accept no responsibility for it whilst it was in transit!
I'm sorry Sony but my patience is now running a little low.

I paid the best part of £1,000 for this camera and I really do expect a little better customer service for my money. It's now time you got your lines of communication well and truly sorted.

As far as the transit issue is concerned, when my Sony monitor (value at the time about £230) needed returning for a warranty repair Sony sent a courier to collect it, who arrived with a custom padded case to transport it in. I would expect the same service in respect of this equipment which has cost me considerably more.
Gary.

PS I also rang my retailer on the same day, and he has heard nothing further from the Sony rep.

Sorry to hear that Gary...
I still have yet to purchase my Camera, probably getting it later this week.

I suppose here in the U.K., we are lucky that we have a year in which to return the product to the supplier if it is faulty. The guys in the states and Canada seem to have different rights.....

I agree that the way that Sony have treated you so far is ridiculous, having as you say spent a Grand on this unit.....

I will purchase mine later this week, and I hop that I will be picking up a trouble free camera, if it does play up, I hope that Sony U.K., realize that there is a fault, and sort out collection and return and make it rapid.

Otherwise, my camera will be going straight back to Dixons, and I will get another , possibly Canon G2....... and they have lost £1000+ worth of trade, and seriously bad word of mouth to anyone who I talk to...

Hope you get some better news about your camera soon Gary....
Keep me informed, either by posting or getting me on e-mail.

I sincerely hope you end up with a bfs free camera.
Apart from bfs the 707 lives up to my expectations and much more

What makes all this even more upsetting for me is, as a confirmed Sony fan upgrading from a dsc f505 as soon as the 707 was available, seeing the UK price fall whilst I wait for a fix from Sony.
Sony are trying my brand loyalty to the limit.
Gary.

I have managed to find a 707 for £850 and they will chuck in a Sony case designed for the 707 priced at £35...

Not too bad, I think, and its a major local retailer (Dixons) so any problems and I can take it back.... and get a new one when new stocks arrive....

Ace Cameras near Bristol have it on their web site for £819 as well as 128MB memory stick for £89! This is probably where I'll buy mine - they've been very helpful answering questions over email.

Now, if I could just figure out whether it'll have BFS or not...

http://www.qed-uk.com £816.90 and free next day delivery. Ordered mine Friday, arrived this morning. I tried and looks good and cannot see BFS yet.

Yeah, exactly why I am gonna buy mine from Dixons. If I cant be bothered with repairs, or the repairs dont resolve the problem, Its easy for me to return... The shop is where I work , so it's good.

Same Kinda price I guess, when they chuck in the Sony case (£35) for nothing.

Risky though, £800 plus, and it aint gonna work properly, pretty poor , aint it.

Anyways I will keep you all posted...

So how did you beat Dixons down to £850? Thta's their price in tax-free at Heathrow and AFAIK high st price is more like £1000.

I see the advantage of buying locally but how did you get that price?

I got the same price at Jessops at the weekend.
All you need to do is print off these messages, and ask for a price match
