i have been shopping around for the d1x and have been encountering many of the non-u.s.a models(grey market) through all the heavily advertised nyc dealers. my questions are these:
1. does anyone have any tips or recomendations for a dealer with great pricing?

2. does anyone have any experience with these types of nyc dealers?

3. does anyone have any experience with these "3-5 year warranties" these guys are offering with the non-u.s.a model equipment? supposedly it is a few hundred dollars to buy this warranty that covers parts and labor for the 3-5 years through a 3rd party company.

4.does anyone have any experience with warranty work on the d1 or d1x through nikon? ie: timing, costs, etc.?

it seems as if i would be covered better and longer through these extended warranties when compared to the nikon 90 day labor, 1 year part warranty. but i don't want to get taken for a sucker.

any help/advice is appreciated.

Avoid the NYC "grey marketers" and their supposed 3-year Mack warranties. First, they generally break apart the units. Once you have paid for the basic camera, you may find that all of the normally included accessories are now extra. Additionally, for something which is such new technology and such a large investment - get a USA model with a full warranty - I don't normally get the extended warranties, but in this case, I did.

As for dealers, call Greg Noble at http://www.canogacamera.com and mention my name. He will take good care of you, and give you the best price possible on a fully warrantteed US unit.

I got my D1X from Calumet for less than 5G not including tax and shipping charges. But even after tax and shipping it was still several hundreds less than what some of the NYC dealers are charging. And the best part of this deal is, it's a US model. I've had great experiences with Calumet since I buy all my photo supplies from them. Try their web site at http://www.calumetphoto.com , click and add the D1X to your shopping cart to reveal the real price (I'm guessing that they can't advertise below Nikon's minimum sale price) I hope this info is helpful to you.

I don't know anything about this site, but A&Mphotoworld.com has the best price I've seen. They list the D1X at $3649. That being said, I know absolutely nothing about them. You might check dealtime.com, also. They list numerous manufacturers, along with their prices and links to their sites.

thanks so much. that is a great resource to protect myself on future purchases.

There must be a typo on the site. When you sellect D1x for your shopping cart, Calumet states a $4350 price. If you back out without purchasing the telltale shopping cart mentions a $4850 item. Wonder if you can snag it for $4350??

Jeff,

Try http://www.robertsimaging.com There located in Indianapolis and I buy all my gear from them. I just bought a D1x for $4700.00 from them and isn't grey market. They are very good to work with.
