I was trying to find a good deal on CS, and I stumbled across this:
http://store.adobe.com/store/products/master.jhtml?id=catCanon#11

If you have a copy of Elements that was part of a Canon bundle, you can upgrade to CS for only $299 (almost the same price as the academic version). You need to have the serial number from the bundled copy of Elements. Deal ends 11/30/06

I just bought a copy for myself and now have figured out how I can get my granddaughter one when I get this one once I pay down my cc. We both have elements, and no, I won't put my version on her laptop. If she doesn't have elements that came with her Pro1, she can use mine that came with my 20D because I never installed them. I used the elements that came with my Wacom tablet to get my CS2.

Thanks much. We had been talking about this wondering how we could each get CS2 and were thinking of just asking Adobe for some kind of break. Now we don't have to and it's good to know the offer will be good for some time to come.

I did find the contact numbers for the Europe pages:

http://partners.adobe.com/resellerfinder/na/reseller.jsp?nav=alc_o

Now I have the awful feeling that they don't have the same deal for Europe, but you could try them first. If you scroll down the page, you will see that there is a contact for Norway, Sweden and Finland, no link for Finland though.

So I asked if a friend in the US (I'm not volunteering) could buy it for him at the Adobe US store. The rep said yes, but he couldn't guarantee that it would work because each version is a little different depending on the country, he just didn't know. Naturally the American version is English, and it might not work on a European computer.

I wouldn't know or understand why or why not.

Hope this helps. It was a toll-free number for North America:

888-724-4508
6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Pacific time, seven days a week

I hadn't considered this, should have caught that it was considered an upgrade, but just thought I got in on a special deal.

It is important to keep the serial number from the Elements jacket if you plan to upgrade CS2 in the future.

I never bothered to install Elements, so will have to find it and be sure to hang onto that serial #.

If you order online and presumably by phone, have the serial number of Elements handy as you will need it both to order (it uses it to subtract the price down from $649) and to install and register CS2 or you can't activate or get the updates. If I remember right (installed too much new stuff lately), I had to enter the serial number early on when I started the install, then it was automatically stored somewhere and didn't have to type it in again when I registered. I think.

I had to update mine right away. There were several available and it took awhile, probably junk I won't use but I don't know the difference at this point.

This may be laughable to some :-).

That isn't quite right. When you upgrade Photoshop to the next version, you need to have the previous version installed or the serial number available.

When you upgrade Elements, you get a full version of CS2 in the mail, as if you went and spent $650. It's not really an upgrade, but a fully new install with its own serial number.

but the rep at Adobe sales told me explicitly yesterday that I would need the Elements serial number if I wanted to upgrade CS2 in the future. Maybe they got that mixed up. I'll keep track of both. The serial number for CS2 is on the back of the jewel case.

I didn't have to go to the Adobe site to register. It was automatic you click on Help> Activate.

There is also an option for transfer application. If you want to move Adobe from one computer to another, you have to disable it on the first computer first or the reinstall won't take so it says. What if your hard drive crashes? I don't have ghosting software. Always some new problem. I was trying to keep my second hd clean from any programs, just data. They do you allow you to do a backup. I have no clue how to back it up so that it will open to deactivate when I have to get another computer.

It was my Wacom tablet I could not do a normal install on because I saw on their site they had updated drivers and you have to uninstall the old drivers first. So I decided to use the dl drivers for the install, but then I had to go to the Wacom site and click on register to take care of that. It wasn't automatic.

Sorry for the confusion.

Ofcourse it would work on an european computer. All computers are the same the world around. I'm just wondering if the US adobe store would ship to europe? or if the same deal is available in europe?

Adobe really hates Finland. They don't offer the academic version of CS2 at all in scandinavia, but they do in the rest of Europe. Grrr. As a poor student I can't really afford 700€ for software and 1300€ for a 30D at the same time.

One would think so, but I certainly can't guarantee that it would.

OK, now I got the impression that they would if you used a valid credit card. You can order online; to order by phone would doubtless be costly for you, but I posted their toll free number in one of my other posts. It probably doesn't work for Europe. But just because some rep whose name I failed to write down says you can but they can't "guarantee" that it would work, when push comes to shove, they might not, and I will be embarassed for butting into your business. I am only trying to help because I put myself in your position, seeing US citizens getting all the deals, and were the shoe on the other foot, I would not like it! I used my cc; sometimes online stores balk when the shiipping and billing address are different. I presume yours would be the same. I don't know if Adobe has that requirement or not; this is my first purchase from them.

I used my VISA card in the online store to purchase CS2, and got a confirmation via email within minutes, same billing and mailing address, got it in just a few days.

Maybe we ought to do something about that if it is true. It's partly about marketing and money. Maybe somebody in Europe can somehow pick up a copy for you. As long as they don't install and register it, you should be OK. They now seem to have builtin safeguards where you can't cheat. Maybe you have an American friend who would purchase it for you. I can't stick my neck out that far. There must be plenty of unused recent copies of Elements floating around. I have two and didn't bother to install either one.

If you go to their site, they do have a tech support email. Maybe you could pick up from here and email them and work out the details. Maybe they will give you an email for sales or even a phone number.

My heart kind of went out to you because I was dealing with the same thing. Both my granddaughter and I wanted it and $649 is pretty pricey, for two copies of it. Now I am going to try to buy her a copy. We could get around it if she switched ownership of her laptop to me, but I'm not going to try to beat the system. You can't be using it on two computers at the same time. They seemingly have thought of everything, and I want to do things the honest way. I have been using an older version that my granddaughter got from a friend or teacher at school, don't know if it was legal or not, she was a student at the time, she installed it on my computer, and I have always felt a little guilty about it. But not so guilty that I didn't get a head start learning it.

Now I have a legal copy.

through all that involved saga (I was multi-tasking installing software), that you can return it for full refund within a certain period. I was almost afraid to break the sealing on the box, had no clue what I might run into!

I did try to read as much as I can tolerate first and installed in a new folder so I could keep my older version of PS until I get comfortable with CS2. Then I will uninstall my other PS.

Many thanks - I was looking into getting CS2 having worked with Elements 2.0 (fairly successfully) for a couple of years now but have always balked at the cost of the full photoshop - $299 way better than the $650 I was almost going to spend. Having just received my rebate check from Canon last night for $330 which I had totally forgotten about I've (in my warped mind) gotten half way to the 30D I'm looking at getting! Life does indeed get better sometimes!

Actually, you can. Read the licensing agreement... It allows you to install on 2 machines, the thought being a person would put it on their desktop (main workstation) and on a laptop. The only stipuation (how would they know?) is both copies cannot be in use at the same time. For more info go to Adobe's website for Photosop and read the section about "activation."

One thing to consider before investing into CS is that Adobe Lightroom and Apples Aperature are modern applications targeting Photography.

While Adobe CS is a great application (I have an OLD OLD version), it is an application that originally targeted graphic artists and the like. I certainly would reconsider getting CS if Digital Photography is the main purpose.

1. Some of us have a need RIGHT NOW for the capabilities CS2 offers
2. Most of us (myself, anyway) have PC's; Aperture is useless for us
3. You can get Lightroom as a beta, but at this point only if you have a Mac

4. From little I've read, Lightroom will not "obsolete" PS. In fact, supposedly some folk will find having both useful
5. Sounds like Lightroom won't be available until November at the earliest

6. Until software actually is released I consider it to be "vaporware" surrounded by myths and rumors - who knows what the actual released version will do? (Various past Windows versions are a good example...)

7. I'd almost be willing to bet after the buzz dies down when it does get released that there will be somekind of upgrade offer available.
