Has anyone had any experience charging the EN-4 battery with the Maha MA-C777PLUS charger? I have the charger, but my D1H and associated goodies will be here Friday. Seems that the initial conditioning and charging are very important on these batteries. Any feedback will be appreciated.

Ron, the EN-4 only accepts a plug from the Nikon Charger.

I don't think the Maha will work. Your EN-4 is an enclosed pack, hard plastic ABS around the cells. 7.2 volt.

The Nikon charger handles both refresh charging, discharge and refresh cycle, plus after the charge cycle is done it drops back down to .52 volts and acts as maintenance charge. You can leave the battery on the charger if you want it topped off.

Nikon also makes a charger that will allow you to charge more than one EN-4 at a time.

Personally, I won't take any chances. Unless you have EN-4 batteries now, you're going to have to wait anyway (for the batteries to arrive).

Just think of that (difficult) 24-hour discharge/recharge wait as part of the initiation ritual you must undergo before using a D1H/X :-)

Thanks for the input.... Guess I am just getting a little anxious and trying to figure a shortcut. The Maha is a pretty slick charger and thus far I have been able to charge several types of NI MH and Li Ion batteries.....camcorder, cell phone, etc. If the EN-4 has any external contacts, there just might be a way. I'll let you know this weekend if FED EX will come thru as promised!!!

Thanks again

Ron,

With regard to the battery conditioning, I can't stress enough how important this is and how worthwhile it will be for you in the long run. When I first got my D1, I couldn't wait and charged it and used it. I did the same thing with the second battery that I got for it. When I got my D1X, I read all the posts about how I should fully charge and discharge the battery 3 times before using it. Since I already had 2 batteries to use in it, I did what everyone advised. It really works and I'd say that it will increase it's capacity between recharges almost 50 percent. I know this is a rough guess but there is a huge difference if you condition it before use. It is well worth the hassle of not being able to use your camera the first day but you will be glad that you did. Just take the time and read the manual for the first 24 hours :) Enjoy the camera.

John Mitchell
