Honest FZ30 review Now that is testing.

(but you don't have to SHOUT :)

F8 means diffraction, the other three have
bigger or much bigger sensors so they aren't
as hurt by f8 as the FZ30.

Incompetence by the reviewer. Maybe he's
no photographer?

RAW will help avoid the poor quality NR of the FZ30. NR tools on the PC are a lot better (since they have virtually unlimited processing power to use). So you can avoid the damage to fine detail with RAW. But the high noise levels are still inherent to the poor sensor design itself. Panasonic's pixel quality really peaked with the 4MP sensor of the FZ10 and has declined since then. I always wished the FZ series would incorporate Fuji's superCCD. That would be the ultimate point and shoot.
Will shooting in RAW help to avoid this problem to some extent?

Yes, but the F10/ F11 sensor would only give around 5.3 mp in the FZ30. That's plenty for me and most people in this forum, but unfortunately Pany has to sell tons of these cameras, and in the MP-war guess what, only MPs count...

I own a FZ10 and FZ30 and have noticed that the image is not as
crisp / sharp as my FZ10. If it were not for excessive noise and
too much image softening with onboard noise suppression the FZ30
would be the Camera of the Decade.
Your FZ10 might have better pixel/ pixel (read pixel-peeping)
sharpness, but in absolute terms the FZ30's resolution is in a
different league.

I disagree... as a photographer who likes to choose my own settings
and doesn't like to give control over to the cameras internal
programming i feel i get better results... if i were to leave it up
to the camera it would too often be wron
I think Robiro does have a point. It's not a 'biased' review, but
measuring the resolution at F8 is not very logical. How often does
one use a superzoom at F8? If they choose not to measure at the
sweet spot then they should have gone for max. aperture, which
will get used much MUCH more often on a superzoom. Less than 2% of
my shots are done with minimum aperture. Max aperture is used more
than 40% of the time.

Eg. measuring noise in a car at the red line is not very relevant
either.

from the FZ20, FZ30 past releases : ). Agreeing to or not to a reviewer is not an issue for an experienced user like you as he won't be able to influence you anymore : ). Just take pictures and post those that you think represents the capability of the camera. Welcome FZ40.
cheers,

We test resolution at several apertures and I can tell you without doubt that F8 on an FZ30 is nowhere near as good as a stop or so up from max aperture (which is why my res chart is at F4.5). I'd rather use an ND filter than use F8 on an FZ30 ;)

Yep, I felt like that when I got my FZ20... the pixel quality went down hill compared to the FZ10. I would have gladly traded the extra 1MP for better pixels. This made the FZ15 very attractive to me.... but it lacked the microphone for videos. :( Bad move on Panasonic's part... then again, nothing is perfect I guess.
