Replacement for 350D standard lens

After buying a telephoto lens i am interested in a lens to replace the 18-55mm.

The budget would be around £300 but if there is nothing good in that range i would spend more.

Would the difference be that noticeable? if not i would get a wide angle instead.

Any suggestions?

Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 DC MACRO

This lens about $350-370 is an amazing piece of glass. Fast for low light at wide and a great range. Quite possibly the best image quality for the price and an excelent kit replacement.

Very Very Sharp, and has a Macro mode. 1-2.3

Best bet:
Sigma 17-70 DC Macro (good range, macro feature, large aperture)

Other good choices:
Canon 17-85 IS (great range, image stabilizer, very fast AF)
Sigma 18-50 EX DC (large constant aperture, great image quality)

i have same problem. in a future i planing to buy full frame body so i'll not waist my money on EFS lenses (are this good strategy?). So decided buy Canon 28-123mm IS USM. And if i need wide angle i'll use kit. On other hand if planing to keep 1.6 frame body so i'll definatly stick to 17-85mm. it's wide enough plus have good range.

Got any sample images from the lens ?

I started with the 18-55 kit lens. Not enough range. Got the Sigma 18-125. Great image quality, good range, but not very usable in low light (just like the kit lens) and not very reliable AF at the long end. Got the Tamron 17-35 f2.8-4. Great for things like dinner parties and concerts, not for museums. Got the Canon 17-85IS. Use it for almost everything. Fast accurate focusing. Fantastic IS. Good range. It took me some time and experimenting to find out the 17-85IS was the right lens for me. But now I'm very happy (although I still need a wider and a longer lens).

Slowly learning to use the DRebel (only around 20.000 shots) and now also the Fuji F11.
