I just picked up this lens for Volleyball\Basketball and when I put it on my camera, it seeme dot work fine, but, instead of a picutre, I got an err99 message in my viewfinder.
Any Ideas?

Googled the error & it seems to be sigma related, but this is a Canon lens.

Thanks, in advance, for all your help.

When the light and composition are strong, nobody
notices things like resolution or pincushion distortion

Err99 is an unspecified error message, so it basically means: "Something went wrong, we just don't know what".

A common problem with this 50mm lens and its mkII is a stuck aperture. Play with the DOF-preview button to open and close the aperture and hope it opens and closes all the time.

If that's not it, try removing the battery for a few minutes, clean the contacts of the lens and the camera.. Basically the standard things when things go wrong.

Defective lens; take it back. It happened to mine too. Second one I got was fine.

This lens is great optically, but it's built like a piece of junk. There's a reason why it's as cheap as it is. You're still getting a bargain for the optics.

I just boxed up my brand-new 50mkII for return to B&H. It came out of the box with a dodgy AF/MF switch - real common problem on this lens - and the failing switch kept leaving the clutch engaged and the AF electronics not working.

Boing! Err99. Locked up the 20D hard. Just take your copy back to the store and get a replacement. It'll be fine.

ALS

PS: My previous copy of the 50mkII worked great. Until I stepped on it, that is. The moral of that story is, "Sometimes the toast does fall buttered-side up, and sometimes we do step on the cheapest and most easily replaceable lens in our bags."

Lens was used. Started playing around with it and noticed that wide open, 1.8, no issues. F4 & above Error 99.

Hmm

thought to try out DOF Preivew and went up the scale from 1.8, clicking DOF button repeatedly.
F4 worked, then error, then worked, etc.

All others broke free of error 99 preety quick.

kept at F4 and it functions gr8 now too.

Think this is noting more than an old lens, not seeing much use, and aperture not as smooth as it should be.

Test it out with DOF preview, get things loose and problem went away.

Instead of playing with it for a half hour.
Thats exactly what it was, you were right.
old Lens, stored, not used adn apertures needed to be clicked a few times.

Will probably send it in to get CLA. Know Canon authorised center, honest, fast, and cheap.

Got the mk I for $125 with a canon 850 camera body too.
not complaining at all if it needs CLA'ed.

Thanks for the depth of field button comment.

My 50 may or may not stick -- it did not stick the other day at the caemra store when the sales repa nd i were discussing sending it in for service.

In my case, it stuck only when pointed straight down.

And it stuck only sometimes when pointed straight down.

But lately, it works just fine, making me think that the aperture leaves were sort of sticky, and have cleaned up because I used it a few times.

And the sticking only began after I dropped the lens.
