Curious as to the board's experience with P.I.M.

I understand that for the crispest original photos, going direct from camera to PIM compatible printer (epsons at this moment) produces the finest pictures.

Importing photos from PIM cameras to virtually any software loses the PIM info. Film Factory 2.0 (not 1.0) retains the PIM info for later printing. However, unless mistake, I believe that no other software retains the PIM headers.

Does anyone have more complete info?

I have a PIM camera, the Nikon 885. I have an Epson 785EXP printer, new. I have magenta prints from it using it off line without a computer. I am using EPSON PAPER and EPSON Ink. Any questions?

There is a general negative opinion of Epson PIM. Have you seen this thread: http://www.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1003&page=2&message=1504009
Have you seen Phil's comments on PIM?

I am getting great prints with my 995 and Epson 785epx using PIM
No problems here. VERY happy camper. Prints look better than from
a developer.. Jerry

Jerry,

Are you using it with a computer or offline?

GeneL

P.S. If offline, what can I be doing wrong. The camera is the 885, pictures were taken outside, bright sunny. There is nothing I can do to screw this up as far as I know. I put the flash card in the printer and use the panel to select and print the picture on 4x6 Epson paper..What am I doing that's wrong...?

Are you selecting the right type of paper? Glossy? Epson 4x6 is bigger paper than Epson 4x6 borderless I found this out. Do you check the pics on the camera to see they look ok before you print them? You know the printer does have filters, can make them darker if to light is in the book.. You might call Epson Tech and asked them to walk you through it. I wish I were there, might be able to figure it out.. Jerry

I have the exact same setup. What do you do to compensate? Any simple trick?

I believe that there was a posting in the News area of this board one day this week, from EPSON, announcing that several software vendors will be supporting PIM. Hopefully, one of them will allow additional adjustments to be performed without loosing the PIM header.

I have a Nikon 995 and also have access to a D-30, which does not support PIM. I have printed pictures out from both cameras and I actually like the looks of the D-30 shots printed from 785EPX better than PIM Nikon shots. Great printer, but PIM??? I used Glossy photo paper (5x7).

Jackie, That is what PIM is for is to adjust the picture. If you adjust yourself it can't work. Does that make sense? Does to me.. PIM is working great on my 785epx with my 995.. Jerry

Jerry, that is true. I guess I didn't explain what I meant. What I'd like to be able to do touch up a blemish on a face, or a crack in the dirveway, or change a (correctly colored) big red nose on grandpa to a more flattering tone. These adjustments cancel out PIM.

While I love the printer, and the PIM prints are really more or less OK, I still can improve my results if I go into Photoshop, which probably speaks volumes about my skill level as a photographer...ha.

Then you can't use PIM, It is only for untouched prints. The printer actually adjusts the colors in the prints you have taken that are not touched up. If you want touchups use Photoshop.. that is not what PIM was meant for.. Jerry
