Cable Release Plug Broke Off in D

The cable release plug broke off in my D. Photo-Tronics in Seattle quoted me US$240 to remove it. They said they'd have to take the camera apart and remove a lot of electronics to reach the socket.

I've tried reaching it with tweezers, but it's broken off too deeply to reach. Would I be crazy to try taking the camera apart myself? Any suggestions?

BTW, this wasn't the Pentax cable release; it was a cheaper 3rd-party one. And it was actually the adapter (camera's small plug size to cable's larger plug size) that broke.

Thanks,

Greg

How tightly is it being held in place and what is the condition of the 'broken' end of the part that remains inside?

At one extreme I visualise superglue on cocktail-sticks with the points cut-off (but glue is weak in tension so this will only work if it is lightly held) and at the other extreme I imagine drilling and partially tapping the resulting hole to get some grip in order to pull the end out (but drilling can only work if the jack is held so tightly it will not rotate)... unfortunately neither option is likely to be feasible

But these jack plugs are not solid and instead have an inner and outer part with an insulator... is there really nothing you can get purchase on with needle-nosed tweezers (or a pair of small hooks) in order to pull the item out?

Maybe a visit to your local lock-smith or jeweller would yeild a small tool allowing said lock-smith or jeweller to extract the item without the need for dismantling your camera?

When I broke an ignition-key in the lock of my car I roughened the edge of a very fine 'jewellers' screwdriver with a junior-hacksaw and a file and this gave me enough grip on the broken end of the key to 'flick' it out of the lock... maybe you, or the lock-smith/jeweller, can do something similar?

Regards!

Try a small fish hook - straighten the shank, and push the barbed end deep into the broken plastic mount. With luck, the barb will dig in when you pull on the hook - bringing the plug with it.

BTW, I can send you a .pdf exploded diagram of the D, if thatwould assist you

I'd very much love to have that diagram as well. I need a top cover assembly because some time ago I smashed my *istD into the ground and partly flooded it. And now the on/off/dof preview is a bit loose.

It's annoying that the camera gets switched off too easy.

Cheers
Chris

Here's a partly disassembled camera:

There's at least 3 layers of PCB's connected with delicate connectors, ribbon cables and a lot more interesting things. It looks as if you have to access the plug from the rear - removing all these PCB's - one holds the sensor :-)

Check your email - .pdf sent. (when opening, ignore any reference to the lack of Chinese/Japanese characters on your machine - they're not required)

Hi Gorjus :-)

I really wouldn't mind a copy of that pdf too if you don't mind, I'm thinking of butchering my *ist D and fitting a permanent IR filter over the sensor when I finally replace it. Thanks.

I'd be very interested, too. Both in the pdf and your IR experiences!

Hi Gorjus!

So you have something similar for the DS? :) I'd be very happy about and grateful for it!

Hi Jens,

Well I'm guessing it won't be until the middle of next year at the earliest assuming that I actually stick with Pentax. That said the following pages provided the seed for the idea :-)

Sorry - not one for the DS.

You're more than welcome to the one for the D, though. (that's if the two I've sent have actually arrived - no-one has responded yet)

For me, it depends whether/when I will upgrade. I'd like to convert the DS.
