Yesterday, a guy in Hong Kong bought a 18-200, which is made in Thailand, not Japan.

Another guy also got a news from Japan, even in Japan, "All 18-200 delivered after the end of Feb are all made in Thailand."

I remember reading on another thread that Japan was fabricating all their VR lenses "in house" so to speak because they didn't want the technology getting out. I read that post and looked down at my new 18-200 VR that I had purchased in JAPAN and it said made in Thailand. A bit dissapointed with that, but hey, I got one. I don't have a camera yet so I can't vouch for the quality, but I will post some pics next week when I go pick up my D200.

I guess that they needed the time to get the manufacturing process right and the workers trained in the Thailand plant. I don't mind the 18-200 coming from the same factory my D70 and 18-70 were made at, as long as I finally get one at all :D. It would not have been realistic to assume that they would be able to meet this massed incredible worldwide demand just through high-price manufacturing in Japan.

Yours
Markus

P.S.: as a non-native speaker, can anybody tell me the right word for the house they build the cameras at :D? Plant? Factory? Temple?

I wouldn't even mind if mine was made in Thailand or whatever, as long as the build and quality is the same and the lens still has a USA warranty. But the "Made In Japan" does look better...

I just calll camerawholesalers where I ordered a 18-200 lens few days ago. They have confirmed that the lens were made in Thailand. Therefore, we are getting 'made in Thailand' lens in USA too.

A bit of disappointed and regret not to order the lens earlier. Hope that the quality still good.

your D70/D70s/D50 are all made in Thailand and same with the 18-70... start complaning about that as well - I mean, they must be junk coming from a coutry like that, right?

I guess in future 'Made in Japan' copies may have a higher resale value.

If D200 or 18-70mm is any indication, then there should not be any difference in quality.

Hi all,

I realy don't understand why you are so worry about lenses made in thailand, I would like to see some test pictures to compare the image quality and build quality as well. But I don't think the differences between the two worth the talk...

Maybee it's a matter ouf proudness ?

best regards

I am not talking about this is junk if made in Thailand. I think it is more about 'uniqueness'. I just miss the chance to have the few 'Made in Japan' verison of this lens.

I do not care where the lens is coming from. It is a NIKON lens with NIKON warranty and quality standard. Stop thinking that because it is made in Thailand it will´be bad. In fact more and more hi-tech companies are installing factories in Thailand, not only for cost reason but also because Thai people are very meticulous and precise in their work.

As previously pointed out, all D70/D50 and D200's have been made in Thailand all along, at the Nikon plant (I don't know the thai word!) in Ayutthaya.

As a frequent visitor there, I find the Thai people to have a phenomenal pride and work/quality ethic, and I am tickled pink when my camera and lens say "Made in Thailand."

BTW, one of the frequently-used portraits of the King of Thailand shows him with a Nikon camera in his hand!

Actually, it has been true in some countries for a while. Like in China, "Made in Japanese" costs abour 30% more.

My 12/18/-05 D200 has been perfect. Unlike the 2 Made in China SB-600 I've gone through for cooking batteries (please no replys like, "did you use the correct batteries? Did you mix and match.") I read my manuals. My 1st SB-800 has been perfect.(made in Japan)

I'm MUCH more concerned about QC in China in 2006 by a large margine.

Hi Randy,

The King of Thailand is a long standing avid photographer and environmental conservationist to boot.
