Just taken delivery of a 5D, a bit worried to hear a rattle when I move the camera around - no extreme movement, just general tilting to look at the unit. I expected something to fall out of the camera body when I took the protective cover off! Anyway, nothing did fall out but is this something others have experienced with their own 5Ds?

Thanks

I am not positive, but maybe it has something to do with 1. the antishake mechanism or 2. the orientation sensor. I'm guessing it would be the latter, that would be rather logical I think.

Nope mine don't make any noise. I was worried too because mine didn't have any packing in the bigger shipping box they shipped it in. Hope yours is ok but it don't sound to good. Good luck!

it could be the lens...

My maxxum 7 has an orientation sensor and it makes absolutely no noise when you tilt it.

With the camera off, and the lens not in place, you have a rattle? Not good-- address it with your reseller immediately while he might still have stock. Should not be making any noise.

Now if you have AS and the camera on, and you have a long exposure (over 1/10 sec), you should probably hear a noise if you have any camera movement as you can hear the AS functioning, but other than that, you should not have rattle.

thanks for the replies - even though it looks like I'm the only one with the rattle. didn't have the lens on at the time I first heard the noise though it makes the same sound either with or without the lens...

I don't have a minolta but my Canon 300D makes a rattle when tilted like yours. On the Canon it is the little brackets that support the pop up flash.

Pop up the flash and try tilting the camera around gently. Try supporting the little brackets with something and see if you can still hear the rattle.

cheers

Mart.

I gave mine a try. With no lens fitted and moderate shaking or turning I can hear a tiny little metallic "snicking" sound. With a lens fitted - nothing. What I hear seems to be the autofocus drive shaft rattling in the mount. When the lens is on it has some pressure on and doesn't move.

Well,

Yes, I have taken some few hundred shots yesterday and I'm a bit unsure what to make of the 5D. With flash, the autofocus (spot, which I prefer) works well enough, in fact pin sharp in most cases when I keep the camera still and AS on. BUT - if the flash is off, AS on, camera on auto, sometimes Prog mode, the focus isn't pin sharp. Most of the pics don't look that bad when they are loaded in a viewer on 'best fit' but when I look at them at full size I am sorely disappointed. Nothing I have focused on is in proper focus - the sharpness just isn't there. I have a Canon Powershot A80 that autofocuses better and an Oly C8080 that knocks the socks off it. I don't want to have to apply sharpness settings to the camera and I don't think that is the answer anyway. More info...I have a cheap Jessops 1A filter on, I read that that might cause problems so I will be taking this off later and testing. I have 3 film SLR Minoltas, I will be swapping lenses later to try them out. Also, I'm wearing specs that are a little underpowered for me at the mo and they need changing, a problem at the mo possibly when I manual focus but this shouldn't impact on the autofocus of the camera (I'm trying to make excuses for the 5D) - damn, I know this camera is not giving me pin sharp results, I don't know why. I don't think I'm expecting too much from the 5D. SOS.

I agree with some of the threads regarding the rattle I've heard, I'm not as concerned as I was that I could hear something. The metal snick describes it perfectly, now that I've read it...thanks
